See me jumping up and down? I have three of my favorite people on my blog! Not just three talented, amazing authors (who write about murder — double great!) but three wonderful, down-to-earth women who I like and admire.
Not to play favorites (because like my children, it’s hard to pick a favorite author), but I’ve known J.T. almost as long as I’ve been published. Her debut thriller ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS came out in 2007, a year after my debut novel. And she asked me — ME! — then totally an unknown to read and blurb her book. I remember reading it on the plane from Sacramento to RT in Florida and being completely and totally hooked. We met for the first time at the first Thrillerfest, in Phoenix, AZ, where I met some of my favorite people in the business — that’s the weekend I also met Toni McGee Causey, who you all know from her time here as a contributor to MSW.
But I digress (surprise, surprise!)
When I heard that the Terrific Trio were back with a new book, I had to have them here on Murder She Writes. I’m not one for boring interviews (yawn) so I asked them a few fun questions and I hope you enjoy their answers.
Q: On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being totally an organic writer (pantser) and 10 being a completely anal plotter, where do you fall?
Erica: Smack dab in the middle at #5.
JT: The more I write, the more plotting and planning I do, so I’d put myself at a 7. Anathema, I know.
Alex: These days I lean on the plotter side at a 7 or 8, although my plotting method continues to evolve and still looks rather messy.
Q: Favorite book or series from your childhood?
Erica: The Trixie Belden mystery series; I read each one multiple times!
JT: Clan of the Cave Bear, by Jean M. Auel. Ayla was so incredibly kick-ass.
Alex: “Harriet the Spy” by Louise Fitzhugh.
Q: Who’s your favorite character in your books? (I know, impossible to pick just one …) Who would play that character in a movie?
Erica: Detective Micki Dare; I love how she’s both tough and vulnerable (but don’t tell her I said that!). Jennifer Lawrence would be perfect in the role.
JT: I have to say Army Ranger Moonbean Alexander Whitfield, aka Xander, Samantha Owen’s betrothed, because I still don’t know everything about him. And Josh Hartnett would be a great choice for the role.
Alex: Grace from my Ryder Creed series is my all-time favorite character, but she might be difficult to cast since she’s a feisty Jack Russell terrier.
Q: Do you write to music? If so, what?
JT: Classical, always, specifically Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky if I’m feeling romantic, a few great movie soundtracks, like Star Trek, Harry Potter 1-7, Out of Africa, Gladiator, Outlander….
Alex: I prefer silence — all the better to hear all the voices in my head.
Q: Would you travel to the past … or the future? When and where?
Erica: The past. And since I have to choose only one, I’m going with the Roaring 20s in New York City. Flappers and Fitzgerald . . . how could I not?
JT: My favorite historical books are actually the middle ages, but I’d hate to be chattel for some man, so if I couldn’t be a powerful but benevolent Queen/leader of free people, then I’d say the future. Where I’d be a powerful but benevolent Queen/leader of free people. Hmm… I seem to have a leadership complex.
Alex: April 1912 in the North Atlantic aboard the Titanic. I’ve always been fascinated by that infamous journey, but I’d want to be whisked back to the present immediately after making it safely into a lifeboat.
Well ………. They lost me at plotter. Sorry, gals, I no longer love you. (Just kidding!) I would be a 2 (Not kidding.) And Erica is my new bestie … I, too have read the Trixie Belden series multiple times! Including one three-day weekend in college when I was feeling nostalgic.
So these three brilliant and fun women collaborated on two books: SLICES OF NIGHT and STORM SEASON. If you haven’t read their series (of which I have, and I ask you why haven’t you read them?) then these shorter novellas are a great introduction to their characters. And if you have read them (good for you!) then you can read more about your favorite characters as they solve another hideous crime.
I hope you love these gals as much as I do. Want to know more?
