I just finished reading Maureen Child’s book, SMALL TREASURES. Maureen originally published this book under her Kathleen Kane pseudonym back in the 1990’s. SMALL TREASURES is a light historical romance, set in the West. She has just self published the book electronically.
Full disclosure here: Maureen is a good friend of mine and I love her writing! So buying this book wasn’t a big risk for me. Except, well, I can’t even remember the last historical romance I bought and read. I’ll tell you the truth—I bought the book to support Maureen’s new venture, then just let it sit on my Kindle.
A few nights ago I was browsing through my books on my Kindle and saw SMALL TREASURES. I pulled up the book, thinking I’d just read a couple pages and…I was hooked. I had forgotten the seductive charm of light historical romances! I finished the book in two days and loved it.
And you know what struck me? With the rapid fire changes happening in the publishing world today, readers now have more choices than ever. Successful authors with strong backlists are stepping up to fill the void left by traditional publishers.
Like SMALL TREASURES book by Maureen Child. Maureen is USA Today bestselling author with a very successful career of publishing over a 100 books. One of her novels, A POCKETFUL OF PARADISE, was made into a CBS-TV movie called The Soul Collector, starring Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Greenwood and Ossie Davis. Maureen has a new, dark paranormal series out that she writes under the pen name of Regan Hastings. The first book, VISIONS OF MAGIC, was released in February, and the second book, VISIONS OF SKYFIRE, will be out October 4th.
So what inspired Maureen decide to self publish her backlist? I asked her to share that with us today. Please welcome, Maureen Child!
Because of digital publishing, writers are being given the opportunity to bring back books long out of print and give them another chance at life. I recently got the rights back to several of my western historicals and chose SMALL TREASURES to self-publish first.
This book was always one of my favorites, starring a woman with absolutely no taste whatsoever and a man who’s been alone so long, he’s sure nothing will ever change. SMALL TREASURES generated tons of fan mail when it was released and I love being able to offer it again to new readers.
Don’t get me wrong. I love writing for Desire and I love writing sexy paranormals as Regan Hastings. But there’s also a special place in my heart for my older historicals and that makes me glad they’re back out on the shelves. (Digitally speaking)
So, how do you feel about seeing an author’s backlist being republished? One commenter today will receive a signed copy of VISIONS OF MAGIC by Regan Hastings.
