Does your favorite movie-watching genre match what you read?
My favorite reading genre is romantic suspense, but I’ve noticed I can’t find a movie that fits this description. One that carries as much romance as suspense. There are plenty of great suspense movies out there, but I find that the romance aspect doesn’t carry its weight. Why is that? Is there even a romantic suspense movie genre? Is it too slow to make a good movie?
I love romantic comedy movies. We caught the last half hour of Hitch on TV this morning. It’s one of those movies I’ll always stop my channel flipping to watch. Same with The Proposal, When Harry Met Sally, and The Holiday. Romantic comedies stress the romance as much as the comedy. Thankfully, my husband enjoys this genre as much as I do. We’re always on the lookout for great romantic comedies. But strangely, I rarely read this genre in fiction. I’ve read a few, but it simply doesn’t click for me.
For my husband and me, our most watched movie category is action. A lot of movies fall into this category. Star Trek, Jack Reacher, Iron Man, James Bond. I always look for the romance in these movies, but it’s usually fleeting. Gotta love the romance between Spock and Uhura and also Tony and Pepper. Sadly, we all know Reacher and Bond will never settle down for good.
I don’t think I read action books. Yes, I love Lee Child and Robert Crais, but are they action? I read them for the meat of the books. I can’t say I’ve ever read a book that reads like a Fast and Furious movie. Maybe I look at the wrong shelves in the book store.
Perhaps I’m comparing apples and oranges. Reading and movie watching are two different types of entertainment. This might be the reason we’re often disappointed when our favorite books are made into movies. What makes for a success in one field, doesn’t work as well in the other.
Help me out here. Recommend a great romantic suspense movie. And what’s the best movie you’ve seen recently?
