Warning, I’m on a rant today!
Why do journalists who are supposed to be hardened and sophisticated, who seem to try to achieve a cynical veneer…why do they giggle like four year olds at romance novels?
Surely you’ve heard the news—while we are in a recession, the sale of romance novels have gone up. Here’s a link to a reasonably even-handed article on it.
The only people who aren’t surprised by the news? US. Romance readers, writers and booksellers.
Journalists? So very shocked. I have heard journalistic pieces on this story that that include comments like, “Romances are ripping the bodice off other books” or some other dumbass…uh…ignorant tripe such as that.
This fries my hide. And lucky you, I’ll tell you why.
I am offended by theses journalists attitude toward romance because they are being hypocrites. On the very same morning these this very respected journalist giggled his way through a piece on romance novels selling so well…he also interviewed a mother of a young girl murdered in California. But it wasn’t an interview. The poor mother was so distraught she couldn’t speak. Her grief was so vivid that I had to turn away.
No one should be exposed like that in the most devastating moment of their entire lives.
The journalist explained with faux sincerely that he was giving her a chance to tell the world about her murdered little girl.
Lovely. It’s all right to emotionally manipulate a woman into a television appearance when she is caught in the most heart-wrenching grief imaginable. That is journalist integrity. Journalists BRAG about bagging these interviews.
But to have to narrate a piece about books that promote love, and that deal with sex in a positive way for woman, that just sends them into giggles and snotty comments about how they never imagined they’d have to report a story on “lusty” books.
They never seem to have any trouble reporting a brutal, humiliating rape of a woman.
It makes my head ring with rage.
And do you know what ticks me off MORE? The female journalists, who instead of defending their sisters who read romance, jump on the bash romance bandwagon lest they be thought “one of THOSE women.”
Well you know what? I AM ONE OF THOSE WOMEN! I enjoy romance novels. I buy them, I read them and I am proud of it.
I’m going to end my rant here with one question. What about you? Are you one of those women who reads romance novels?
