I’m on vacation. A much needed vacation. I handed in my fifth Bone Secrets novel two days before we left, and I was ready to turn my brain off for a while. I didn’t even shop before we left. I kept telling myself that if I needed something, I’d buy it there. We’re on Oahu. My husband has never been here, but I spent four months here after college and returned numerous times for vacations when I was in my twenties. As I got older, Maui and Kauai held more appeal. I had kids and wanted a quieter environment. I haven’t been here in fifteen years. Some things are sadly different; the amount of erosion of Waikiki Beach breaks my heart. Some things haven’t changed; traffic is still horrible.
My husband needed a break, too. He works for three different employers as a contractor and they had turned up the volume in a huge way over the last few months. I was having problems getting him away from his phone and laptop. The guys he works with tend to ignore the fact that he’s on vacation and call with every little problem. I can’t remember a vacation where he didn’t have to address someone’s “emergency.” So far, so good. He’s left his phone in the room almost every time we’ve gone to the pool or beach. I didn’t tell him, but I changed the greeting on his cell phone to state that he’s on vacation and wouldn’t be returning voicemails or calls for 10 days. He hasn’t figured it out yet. Shhh!
So I’m doing lots of reading. I can’t say enough good things about the Kindle PaperWhite for reading in the sun. Look at that clarity and no shine!
We’re also eating a lot. Those are pineapple whipped cream pancakes. No, I didn’t finish. I think I’ve about reached my limit on Kahalua pig. I’ve had it in quesadillas, pizza, and traditional plate lunch. Mmmm.
I took all the photos from our room. We’re doing very little. I plan to show Dan a lot of the island in the days we have left, but mostly we’re recharging. To us that means simply absorbing the peace of the ocean. It wasn’t until I scheduled this blog to post that I realized today is Halloween. That must mean we’re truly relaxing. Dates and time don’t mean much right now.
