Hamsters and Romance Novels: Who Knew
By Jessica Scott
I’m so glad to be here today. When Allison and I were talking about what to write about, she mentioned that I should talk about the hamster fiascos that frequently occur in my house and how the little buggers managed to slip into my book BACK TO YOU.
It all started with the pre-k class pet, Fluffy.
Except that Fluffy was not a good pre-k class pet. She slept all day and when she wasn’t sleeping, she was rattling the cage, trying to figure out the latch (she actually really did figure out the latch, prompting extra security on her cage but more on that in a second). And she was not really cool with being picked up by a bunch of four and five year olds.
Regardless of her anti-social personality, when she came home over the holiday break, my kids were super excited.
So one night I was in my office writing and I noticed that it was quiet. Too quiet. I turned around and glanced at the hamster cage and…well, the door was still shut. Where the heck had Fluffy gone?
Three hours go by and I can’t find this doggone hamster. And I’m thinking the entire time – what if the dog got her? I’ve just traumatized the entire pre-k class by killing their class pet.
Fluffy was eventually recaptured and after several more escape iterations, I finally duct taped the cage shut. Because there’s little worse than hearing your then four year old go “Wait a minute. Meggie (german shepherd mix dog) was back there. Fluffy was out….Meggie ate Fluffy!”
Fluffy was never eaten and she lived a good life at our house. She was eventually joined by Hammy who was eventually joined by Squeak who was eventually joined by Jerry Bear who was eventually joined by Mako.
But the hamsters also became part of the story of BACK TO YOU, too.
And my Facebook and twitter feeds are periodically filled with “Hamster in the open, Hamster in the open”. Or sometimes, there will be a hamster in a top hat.
I hope you’ll stop by and check them out.
I’ll be around today and tomorrow to chat! Let me know if you have any questions, about my book, my hamsters, or me!
