It’s with a very heavy heart that I’m announcing some major changes here at Murder She Writes.
Anyone who has been involved with a blog knows how difficult it is to keep the community active and growing, particularly when the bloggers have full-time jobs (for us, writing) and families and deadlines. We’ve had some ups and downs over the eight years MSW has been active. We launched in November of 2005, and I believe we’re one of, if not the, longest group author blog out there.
But we’ve been talking a lot over the last couple of months and decided that most of us couldn’t re-commit for the coming year. As a result, MSW will no longer be a group blog.
However, I am one of the last two remaining original members of MSW (along with Karin). I don’t want to give up the blog. With Karin’s blessing, I’m taking over the reigns of Murder She Writes and will relaunch it on January 6th. It will still be Murder She Writes, only the “She” will be, essentially, me and the occasional guest. And all the MSW gals have agreed to guest blog at least once in the coming year, if not more! Plus, I’m extending invitations to all past MSW bloggers to join me once or twice this year to get us all up to speed about what they’ve been doing.
I’ll blog about the things I’m most interested in: books, writing, television, movies, kids, animals. I’ll be experimenting with “vlogs” (video blogs). My daughter, who writes book reviews for RT and is both an artist and exceptionally well read, has agreed to blog on occasion — I will definitely be holding her to that! I will regularly host guests, starting with Julie Kramer on January 7. I will blog two or three times a week, maybe more if the muse strikes me! Some will be short; some will be long. But I hope they’ll all be fun and interested.
And I hope you’ll stick around for the reboot.
I’m going to miss everyone — and I know you will, too. I wanted to make sure you know how to reach them all! I asked all the gals some questions, and I’ve included links to their website and the cover of their next book. Definitely, keep in touch.
Josie has written 16 books, both fiction and nonfiction, and even had a series optioned for television! What I love most about Josie is her smile. Every time I’ve seen her in person, she’s had this amazing smile that lights up her eyes. That smile comes through in her writing.
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
Gone with the Wind. It would be wonderful to get caught up in the romance, drama and grand saga again — especially at the age of thirteen, when the fire to write was first stoked in me.
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
12 Years a Slave. This true story was sad and inspiring all the same. Each scene was so lovingly crafted: dialogue, performances, and cinematography. Every second of the film was worthy of subject.
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
Of Mice and Men. There is a reason it is studied in American Literature classes from the 10th grade and into college grad programs–John Steinbeck’s eloquent prose is befitting of this tale of hope, anger, loss, and friendship. In fact, it was inspiring to one of my children, who completed his degree in Journalism. In a family of three writers (his father, too is a scribe) I mean it when I say he’s the best writer in the family.
I “met” Deborah through Maryelizabeth Hart from Mysterious Galaxy. I spoke to a San Diego RWA meeting and they were selling my books. They also had Deborah’s, and Maryelizabeth hand sold it to me. I also pre-ordered the second, which was signed and sent to my mom. My mom read them first and said, “I love her.” That meant I, too, love Deborah. She’s down to earth and writes good books, plus she’s funny. I don’t know many people who would agree to pop a bottle of champagne with me at the middle of a mystery writers conference panel–where we were the speakers! Deborah has published 5 books … with many, as she says, buried in the backyard of the house she lived in a decade ago.
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
Atlas Shrugged or Johnny Tremain.
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
I didn’t get to see many movies–and I normally see everything. I resolve to change that in 2014!
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
The bestselling novel in the genre they think they’d like to write in–write what you like to read.
B.J. has written a rocking 68 books … with 14 more in the pipeline! Wow. What I love most about B.J. is her calm and sense of peace. I don’t know if this comes from being a rural girl, or if she’s just one of those people who is always kind and considerate, but she’s one of the most grounded — and interesting — people I know. I feel blessed that I’ve gotten to know her over the years, proving that the writing community is still close even when the miles separate us.
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
The Shining by Stephen King
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
Charlotte’s Web
Kendra’s fifth book will be out this coming June! I will never forget Kendra’s first book. I was judging a contest and knew it was going to sell. It took longer than I thought, but obviously Amazon isn’t just a bookseller–they know a good book when they read one! I’m so thrilled her series was picked up. I was lucky enough to get to know Kendra even better over the last few years, and I love her ability to forgive my cluelessness. I don’t know if she remembers my big foot in my mouth moment at Thrillerfest, the big faux paus of mine that I still cringe when I think about … but she’s still talking to me, so that’s a good sign!
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
THOR 2 I had low expectations since I thought the first was weak, but I loved it.
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
Suze Orman’s 9 STEPS TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM
Two-time RITA winner for best romantic suspense, Laura has both smarts and talent. I met her long before she joined the blog, and since we have very similar writing styles it was a no-brainer that we co-wrote a book together — and have another Moreno & Hart mystery planned for the summer. FAR GONE is her 12th book — and her first hardcover! I’m so thrilled for her, and know everyone else will love this book, too.
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
If I could go back in time I would sit in the window seat at my grandmother’s house and open up Little Women for the very first time. That book captivated me from the first page and lured me into the magical world of reading.
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
I was reluctant to see Rush because I am not very interested in car racing. But the story pulled me right in because of the rivalry between the two main characters. Thrilling movie!
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
I would give them Stephen King’s On Writing because it is such a compelling account of the ups and downs that go into being a writer. Very inspiring.
I met Karin on-line in 2003 when I submitted my “application” to be part of a critique group. I didn’t know any of the people (and they were anonymous until you were accepted into the group!) and had to submit my writing before they would let me join. I loved that group, a total of 8 of us, who are all now published, including a #1 New York Times bestselling author (Maya Banks). I learned so much from those gals, not only about writing and storytelling, but about friendship and support. About the writer’s life. Karin has always been a rock, she never minces words, what you see is what you get — and it’s all good. Karin keeps people honest and real. There are a lot of things to love about Karin, but what I love most is that she loves her family with such passion and heart that it makes me feel wholly inadequate. She’s the character she should write about — or have a reality show about her life! 🙂
If you could go back in time and read a favorite book for the first time again, what would it be?
The Wolf and the Dove
What movie did you see this year that you didn’t think you would like, but you did?
Pitch Perfect
If your son or daughter told you they wanted to be a writer, what book would you give them?
Stephen King’s On Writing
And to our faithful readers, thank you for being a part of our community, have a very Merry Christmas, and I hope to see you back on January 6th!
Wow. I think I’ve been stopping by almost since you guys started this. I’ve met so many great people through MSW. I’m sorry you won’t be continuing as a group blog, but I’m so glad you’ll be keeping it going yourself, Allison. Thanks!
Good luck to you all in all your endeavors. :hugs:
B.E. — you’ve been one of our most faithful readers! And I think the first time we met was in Dallas, right? (I get my conferences mixed up sometimes — it was a long time ago.) I hope to keep the community going on my own, I have some fun ideas 🙂
LOL, we’ve never met in person, Allison. Not that I wouldn’t love to someday.
We haven’t???? Where do you live? I really thought we did once … maybe I dreamed it 🙂
Awwww – sorry to see the gang go, but that is good news in a backhanded way as they will have more time for writing. Which means more books for moi!
Have really enjoyed the Blog and the guest posts in the past and look forward to the changes in the New year!
Go Allison!
Er, when I said ‘go” I meant that as encouragement – not for you to go too! 😀 Heeeeee!
Thanks Willa! I think that’s what’s on everyone’s mind — having time for everything. Thank you!
Thanks to all you MSW gals for keeping the blog fun and interesting for the rest of us. Thanks to you, Allison, for keeping it going. Merry Christmas, all.
Thank you! Merry Christmas 🙂
Several of my favorite group blogs are going this way. I’ll miss everyone, but I’m thrilled you are keeping the door open, Alli. This has been a morning routine for me from the moment I first discovered MSW. I’ve made lasting friends here–you included–and I’d be truly sad if the doors closed for good. I look forward to the new year and the new look. If there’s anything I can do to help, just ask! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
You’ve been here from the beginning, and I was so, so, so happy that we’ve had the chance to share meals and get to know each other. I wish you a lot of luck with your own writing! And make sure you let me know when you have a new book out, you can definitely guest blog again. I loved your last blog!
Bittersweet news, indeed! I got my start blogging here for several years and really feel a deep connection to MSW and all the amazing readers and writers I met while a part of this blog. This is truly your labor of love, Allison, and I think it’s just perfect that you’ll be carrying on MSW under your banner. I am looking forward to reading your insights and guest blogging on occasion! Merry, merry Christmas to all and here’s to an amazing 2014!!!! xoxo Rocki
I feel blessed to know you, Rocki, and am so glad you’ll be visiting in 2014! At least the blog … and if you’re ever in Northern California … we’ll have fun!
This is indeed sad news. I found my way here a few years ago to follow the posts of a single author and wound up as a reader of six of the eight authors on this blog.
I’m glad to see that you’re planning on keeping it alive, even if it’s no longer a group blog. If nothing else, I know where I can get great recommendations for television programs 🙂
Best of luck to everyone who has been involved in making this such an entertaining and educational stop.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the entire MSW family.
Thank you Stephen! 🙂
Wow, I’ve been around since a few years after you started. I visit daily but rarely comment. I’ll miss everyone but I’m so happy that you, Allison, are continuing with the blog. I’ll try to comment more. 🙂 Hugs to everyone.
Holly, we get a lot of visitors, 10-15X more visitors than commenters! That’s not the reason for the revamp. It’s time that’s the big issue. And everyone from MSW will be visiting at some point in the year! Thank you for all your support through the years. 🙂
LOL! I had to think hard to remember what you were talking about, Allison. I’d completely forgotten and hadn’t thought twice about it. Obviously you didn’t know you could predict the future.
But now you remember! OMG, I must have blushed ten shades of red. But it’ll make a good story someday … of course, since we both write murder, it might not have as happy an ending as you have! XOXO
First I have to say a big THANK YOU to all the wonderful authors who have blogged here the last 4 yrs or so. Having both MSW and Murderati blogs to look forward to every day was really good for me. There was a lot of sadness in my life at the time and these blogs were major pick me ups! I’ve discovered so many new favorite authors here and have loved getting to know all of you through your blogs.
Looking forward to what the new year brings here at MSW. Sorry for rambling like a crazy person. Getting the houhjts from my head to the page is a challenge!
Happy writing ladies! Looking forward to new books next year from all of you. 🙂
Thank you Erin — and I’m going to have some guest bloggers from the old Murderati, too! I’ve already sent a note off to JT Ellison, a good pal of mine, she has a book out in February and her blogs are always so much fun.
I really hope JT says yes! I follow her personal blog and love it. Also I hope Silver James guest blogs as well. Liked her last one a lot.
Allison,
I love you.
I love how you write, and how you champion other authors. I’ve always considered myself very lucky to be in your large circle of friends and admirers. It’s been a joy to have taken the MSW journey with you, and I’ll definitely pop over with comments on the topics you tackle here. I’m always up for your prescient insights. 🙂 xx
You are sweet, and I think that the writing community is the best there is. We all support each other, and that’s been what I love about all the friendships I’ve made, especially here at MSW. You will be back! Just let me know when you want 🙂
I’ll be seeing you here in 2014, Allison. It’s been great to get to know many of the other authors on this site and I’ll be looking forward to their posts in the New Year.
Thank you Barb!
Cheers to MSW and 8 fantastic years! I’m sad to hear it won’t be a group blog any longer, but very happy to hear the blog will go on…I’ll be checking out the re-launch in the New Year!
I loved your blog the other week! You are welcome back any time. I love, love, love your cover, and my artistic daughter saw it today (thank you for the copy!!!) and said it’s one of the best she’s seen.
Thank you so much, Allison…I’d love to come back! And I’ve seen some of your daughter’s work and been very impressed, so I’m excited that she loved the cover!
Change is inevitable. It is sad to see the blog break apart as I have found new authors to read through here. I wish all of the authors success in 2014 and to you Allison I will stop by to see what you can tell me about television, children and animals, and always what you are up to in writing.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a Happy New Year.
Thank you Linda! 🙂 Merry Christmas.
I’ll miss you guys and all your posts! But I totally understand the time issue, and the amount of effort that goes into posting like this. So, to all the contributors, many, many thanks for starting my day off with your thoughts. Best of luck and wishing you lots of sales.
Allison, even if you post once every two months, we’ll be around to read your thoughts. I’ve taken several of your classes and so appreciate your generosity — plus — you’ve gotten me started on a few shows you’ve blogged about!
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year!!!
Susanne
Thank you Susan! I plan to blog regularly, certainly more than every two months, LOL. JUSTIFIED starts in January and I’m going to be blogging about that show for sure!
Oh, Allison! This is a beautiful tribute. Murder She Writes has been such an amazing place to meet people and talk about ideas, books, life… I feel so blessed to have been part of this community.
I’m going to miss you! But you’ll be here in April for sure because we have to make sure everyone knows about FAR GONE.
Allison is amazing. I’ve been in awe of her from the first time I met her.
It was honored to be part of the MSW team for the past year.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and the best of new years!!
You are so sweet. Writers, all of us, are awesome 🙂
Wow! This blog has been through a lot of changes. I will miss seeing these lovely writers every day on here, but YES!!! they can write more books. I will still faithfully follow along with Murder She Writes.
And you’ve been with us for all those changes! Thank you so, so, so much for being a faithful follower. We love you!
I guess I’ve been expecting this, most of the author (both single and group) blogs I have followed over the years are gone. I don’t Facebook or Twitter so this is where I keep up with my favorties and meet new authors. Not sure I’ve been here from the beginning but it was darn close. I lurked for many years before writing my first comment. MSW has introduced to me to new authors I’m sure I would have found on my own. Thank you all (current and former MSwS) for all the years and a BIG thanks to Allison for keeping it alive. Even if it’s only updated once or twice a week it will be welcome.
Thank you! Blogging is hard, but it’s fun, and I’m at heart an extrovert in an introverted profession, so I enjoying blogging and communicating with everyone else. It keeps me sane.
It has been an amazing run. MSW feels like home to me, and it’s hard to say good bye, but with that, I’ll be back to visit.
Ladies it has been my pleasure blogging with each and every one of you.
So long for now, I’ll you when A reboots this baby! xo
Merry Christmas and a very Happy safe and prosperous New Year!
I love you Karin. MSW has been successful largely because of you and I so appreciate that you never quit. This had been a group decision, and you have supported me from the beginning. I hope your family is healthy and safe this Christmas season, and know that you and yours always in my prayers.
I look forward to following you when you relaunch the new blog on January 6. Good luck to all of you in the coming year.
Thanks Renee! 🙂
Allison, you and all the wonderful ladies I came to know on MSW are true friends. Love you and hope to see you in 2014! I’ll certainly be glad to join you here sometime!
Hi Debra! I hope you’ll guest blog for me sometime, and catch everyone up on what you’re doing, you prolific writer you! 🙂
I’ll miss you all! Allison, I love that you are taking over the blog and I know you’ll do a great job. I will always have special feelings for all the MSW gals!
Wishing everyone an amazing 2014!!
I hope you’re guest blog some time next year!
I’ll always be here, Allison! As a faithful follower, reader, writer, and friend. thanks so much for the opportunity to blog with you and the other amazing women! What a joy! I will miss each of you as I will miss interaction with our faithful followers.
You’ve been a daily read for me for several years now. I will miss the writers who are leaving and will enjoy reading what you have to say as you take the reigns.
Enjoyed seeing you at Thrillerfest last year when I was able to come with Amy S. I will keep reading. This blog has been an inspiration for me.
Shame, it’s past my bedtime — on my 1st A.B. (Cold Snap) & can’t put it down — and I’m 81-yrs-old. Elder abuse? What would I tell my baby girl if she wanted to be a writer? She already is. It was her PhD dissertation in Conservation Biology (I brag about her every chance I get). She gets her brains from her Mom & her beauty from me.
