It’s February, the month of romance! Hearts and flowers and chocolate all come to mind (maybe in part because we see those three items EVERYWHERE)! We spend a lot of time figuring out just what to get our sweeties for Valentine’s Day. This year my sweetie ordered something special for me. As a side note he’s the absolute best at cards. No one picks the perfect card like my sweetie. I can’t wait to see what he’ll select this time.
Back to what I’m getting for Valentine’s day. You know we’ve been working on this old house now for about four years. Most of the work has been necessary work like electrical, plumbing, etc. But now we’re getting to the fun parts like decorating and landscaping. For my birthday, my husband started bookcases in the room we’re calling the library. That’s an ongoing project. Now is the time for outdoor planting in Alabama. He’ll get back to the bookshelves soon. With all the outdoor work, Valentine’s Day presented the right opportunity to get something I’ve always wanted. Flower boxes! One beneath each of the double windows of the second floor on the front of the house would add the final, perfect detail. It took some time but I finally found awesome, affordable window boxes. And here’s the other cool things: they are made of PVC so they won’t ever rot or need painting and they have their own little irrigation system. You fill the little irrigation thingie and that’s it for a week. Since the front of the house faces east I can plant lots of pretty flowers that will be exposed to just the right amount of sun. I cannot wait!
The tulips that were part of my Christmas present are peeking above the mulch. We also planted day lilies among the tulips so that when they go away for the season we’ll still have more beautiful blooms to come. Next on my list are climbing rose bushes. They may have to be early Mother’s Day presents since February and March are the best months to plant. In our driveway currently are pallets of stones that will be stacked around flowerbeds and raised vegetable garden beds and a big pile of mulch for around the shrubs. It’s very exciting! I’ll post pics later in the spring.
