Here we are a whole nine months after I drew in a big breath and took the plunge! No, I didn’t increase the number of dependents on my tax return but I did give birth to a new beginning for my series, the Faces of Evil. As a writer I am as proud of this series as a beaming new momma! I love the characters, from Jess and Dan all the way to Spears. I love the concept of exploring the motives behind the evil that befalls us. I love the setting, Birmingham, Alabama. I guess you can see that where this new series is concerned I just love it.
But, like any new momma, I’m also a little scared and worried this go around. What if I send my series off into the world with everyone watching and no one likes it? What if no one picks it for their nifty reading device? What if it sits forlornly at the bottom of all lists…? After all, Amazon and BN rankings are everything when it comes to a digital release. Yes, yes, it’s true that the debut book in the series, OBSESSION, as well as the second book, IMPULSE, were released just before Christmas last year as indie books. It’s also true that the two experienced a pretty darned spectacular success selling more than 100,000 copies. It was incredibly exciting and utterly amazing! I was so nervous and I cried so many happy tears. Yet, this is different. There are millions of Kindles and Nooks out there and millions more books waiting to be read. And this time it’s not just me sending my baby off to the first day of school. This time it’s like sending my child off to the Olympics and not only do I want her to win but there are the coaches (editor) and the members of her team (marketing) and, Lord have mercy, all of America (you!) watching. Everyone is wondering what will happen. It’s terrifying. And the third book is just a month from release. What if it’s not as good as the first two? What if all those wonderful people who enjoyed OBSESSION and IMPULSE hate the next book…? What if the fourth book which is in my editor’s capable hands is not good enough either? What if, what if, what if…the worries will make you crazy and I can’t be crazy because I have book five to write…and then book six and so on. I have gracious and awesome readers who want to know what happens next. It’s my job to make sure Jess and Dan keep solving crime in Birmingham and continue working through their tumultuous personal relationship (and do I have some surprises in store for you!!!!!).
So, besides wringing my hands during these long nine months since the initial debut of the series, I have been busy working on more books in the series, POWER, RAGE and currently REVENGE. I’ve also been developing a way to ensure the readers could keep up with the series and the characters and everything related to Jess and Dan’s world. Be sure to go to www.thefacesofevil.com and check out the result! There will be lots of prizes and each Friday there will be an update on the world of Jess and Dan (and occasionally me!). I’ll be posting photos from research trips to the Magic City and interviews with amazing folks in the field of law enforcement. But the most fun part of all—I’ll be featuring suspects. No, not the suspects from the stories, but folks like YOU. Yes, you. I’ll post your photo and whatever info you’d like to share and your thoughts on one or more of the books. Each suspect wins a terrific prize and EVERYONE who comments on a weekly briefing (aka the weekly blog) as well as the suspects will be entered to win even bigger prizes. If you want to be considered as a suspect you’ll need to sign up as a person of interest first. Don’t be shy! You might even end up in a book (with your permission of course)!
For the next few weeks we’ll be giving away prizes and featuring a new chapter from POWER and the week of September 4th, when POWER releases we’ll blow it out and give away a leather bag like Jess Harris carries ($275 value)! A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet ($199 value)! As well as several gift cards to your favorite online book store. Do not forget to drop by and comment every Friday. Give me hints on what you’d like to see in upcoming books and what you enjoyed in particular about an already released book.
Tell me about your favorite villain of all time and what character you would want to play in a novel or a movie. Just as soon as you do that hurry over to www.thefacesofevil.com and explore! We have things to do, folks, and YOU are a part of my team!
