The time change last weekend has screwed up not only my inner clock, but my kids.
It’s never happened like this before. Usually, the time change is but an irritable bump in the weekend. But it’s already Thursday and my kids can’t get to sleep at night and they are monsters to wake up in the morning. Last week, all my kids got up on their own by seven (usually much earlier) and getting them ready for school was never a problem. Now? My husband and I have to wake them up multiple times, showers are rushed, lunches are small, and they’re barely to school on time. We’re yelling, they’re frustrated, no one is happy in the morning. All because of the stupid time change.
Worse, they aren’t going to sleep at nine anymore–they are wired and can’t sleep (except my 10 year old daughter–she crashes by 8:30.) Which means I can’t settle into my evening routine because they’re not asleep.
It’s enough to drive me crazy.
One of the things my trainer told me was that when you don’t get enough sleep, you put on weight–or have a harder time losing it. I’ve been seeing my trainer for 14 weeks and lost 10 pounds (yeah!) but yesterday, I’d gained a pound. Why? Springing forward … I’ve been writing later at night, which means I add another small meal at midnight, but I still have to get up by 7 and the four hours of sleep isn’t quite cutting it.
You’d think that with my daily 2-3 miles on my treadmill, my kids with all their activities (it’s baseball and softball and track season — yep, one kid in each!), that we’d be out cold before nine.
I wish.
But there are many positives …
- The weather. It’s been an amazing 80 degrees in Elk Grove this week. Clear skies, light wind, sunny days. Wow.
- Baseball. Go Giants! LOL … but seriously, watching AA baseball (7 and 8 year olds) is such fun as the boys are learning the game. Most haven’t played before, so they’re all learning together. And for the first time, my 10 year old daughter is playing softball and has an amazing arm! She’ll be pitching as well as playing in-field. Don’t know what position yet, but she can already throw from third to first, accurately.
- Spring Musical. The school is putting on The Wizard of Oz and Kelly, my almost 17 year old, is the Wicked Witch of the West. I can hardly wait to see the performances.
- GRIMM. The television show GRIMM, one of my all-time favorites, is finally back after a three month hiatus. I hope they don’t do that again!
Aside from the pros and cons of early spring, I’ve made some major changes to my writing process. Not so much my process (i.e. how I write) but to my schedule.
I’ve always been a huge procrastinator. I write to deadline and stress during the last week or two because I don’t know how I’m going to get my book done, but I always seem to squeak by. Still, it’s not fun. One of the things I’ve done is to walk on my treadmill in the morning, before I start work. This forces me to take a shower (don’t laugh! There are days where I stay in my pajamas and then shower only in the afternoon … if I have to go out.) But if I walk for an hour, believe me, I want that shower. The shower is an external sign that it’s time to work. (Now, I’ll admit, after my walk and shower I put on clean pajamas, but at least I feel refreshed!)
I’ve also focused on accepting my screwy writing process; accepting it has freed me. I don’t outline. I don’t plot. Sometimes people convince me that I could write better and faster if I did outline, so I spend days trying to plot out my book only to pull my hair out, frustrated and ready to toss the computer out the window. I also accepted that I am far more creative if I break up my writing day — day and night. I write well for 3-4 hours, but then I need a break. When I was stressed, I’d force myself to write 6, 7, 10 hours straight, but I was writing crap and giving myself headaches and stressing because I knew that I was writing crap. I now write 3-4 hours during the day, and 3-4 hours at night. I wind down with an hour of television (I have a LOT recorded!) I’m less stressed and writing better, faster.
For the first time since I’ve been published, I actually finished three projects early. I never finish early. I write to the deadline. But last month, I turned around page proofs for Reckless early; page proofs for Stolen early; and I wrote a short story for the NINC anthology … early. Turned it in two weeks early!
What this tells me is that by de-stressing my writing schedule and working with my natural ebb and flow of creativity, I’m more productive and happier. I can enjoy the kids sporting events without thinking about what I need to be doing, go to the movies and watch television without feeling guilty, read more … and, ultimately, write more.
Speaking of Reckless, an e-novella, it’s on sale now!
Two suspicious hikers …
An unmarked grave …
A missing child …
FBI trainee Lucy Kincaid’s spontaneous weekend camping trip with her boyfriend, P.I. Sean Rogan, turns into a deadly nightmare when they come across two hikers looking for their lost son. But when Lucy and Sean split up to help find the missing child, each quickly realizes that the parents have a dark secret they’ll kill to keep.
NOW … I need your help. My story for the NINC anthology needs a title. I don’t like what I have and I need to turn in my final draft tomorrow. I haven’t written cover copy or anything, but here’s the basic story:
After an attempt on her life while in police custody, the key witness for the prosecution, 15-year-old street-smart Angel Santana disappears. Her estranged father, former cop-turned bounty hunter Jake Morrison, finds her and promises to protect her, but Angel doesn’t want his help. He wasn’t in her life growing up, why is he back now? But when someone shoots at them, she realizes that her contact in the prosecutor’s office is the only one who knew where she was. Now on the run with a dad she barely knows, they have to stay alive one more night until court convenes in the morning. Angel comes up with a bold but reckless plan that just might work–or it might kill them both.
Right now I’m calling it 36 Hours, but I don’t really like that. (Of course, if everyone here likes it, I’ll keep it!) I need a new, catchy title. Suggestions?

I’m forever grateful we don’t have it here. I never did like that ‘extra’ hour.
It’s worse in the spring because you LOSE the hour! I’m still trying to find it …
Daylight Savings is evil. I’m a ridiculously early riser (hitting the gym by 5:00 is my usual!), and ’round this time of year, I’m finally seeing sunlight again before I go to lab (you may laugh, but a few months of leaving the house & returning in pitch darkness is depressing!)… and then DST kicks in and it’s back to spending the early part of my day in darkness. Not to mention that the US does their DST switchover at a different time than Europe, and that most of Asia doesn’t use it… how am I supposed to keep track of & watch football [soccer] from the mother continent?? Wasn’t it hard enough already to juggle the time difference with my friends back in Asia??
Can you adopt me? I’m tired of the cold, dark, and snow here (we’re making up for last winter’s lack of snow with a vengeance, haha). I promise to get myself up early in the morning, even after Daylight Savings And keep you exercising– I’ll have you running 10K’s and 6’30″ miles in no time
Title’s grown on me– first I was rather ‘meh’ about it, but now I quite like it. Very 24-ish. Of course, I’m the girl who’s going to be running to her advisor five minutes before the form is due at the Registrar’s office going “I have to submit my dissertation title in 5 minutes and can’t come up with anything that doesn’t involve several expletives regarding graduate school! Once I turn this form in, the title is written in stone… HELP!!”, so titles are clearly not my forte..
LOL — I’ll admit, the best thing about California is the weather. I love spring in Sacramento. Summer, not so much.
I liked the title. She has 36 Hours from when she is nearly killed to stay alive before Monday morning when she has to meet with the judge. But … as I wrote the story, it’s actually resolved in less than 24 hours. That Monday morning isn’t as important.
This was the first year I noticed the time change affecting me. I had to get reading glasses this year too. Guess it’s the age thing catching up to me.
I’m liking the title, it caught my eye and had me pausing for a sec. Good luck! Track meet this afternoon for my daughter.
Have fun at the track meet! Hope your day is as beautiful as mine
For some freaky reason, I naturally started the DST schedule a week early. I woke up super early and crashed early, so I breezed into the time adjustment. I love DST because it stays light later. The DH and I walk two miles at noon, but this gives us a chance to double it in the evening.
Titles. Ugh. I’ve spent the last two days with the Thesaurus, trying to title the work I just turned in. Some people have a knack for them. Not me. Seems like Karin is pretty good.
Lucky you … I wish they’d just get rid of the time difference. Arizona doesn’t have it. So for five months, Katie was an hour ahead. Now we’re in the same time zone. Weird.
I either come up with GREAT titles or sucky titles. For my books … I titled about half of them. Maybe a bit more.
I. Hate. DST. Like stab-eyes-with-a-fork hate it! It’s stupid to keep doing it. I miss the days when The Only played softball.
Titles. 36 Hours is okay but I’m not that in love it. Off the top of my head:
Saint Angel
)
Through the Night
Night Run
Staying Alive (okay…showing my age with that one
Bounty
I normally come up with titles while I’m writing so it’s a good thing I don’t work in marketing or something!
I actually like Night Run. It’s like Midnight Run, which is one of my favorite movies, but different
I am no fan of the time change and this goes for both now and in the fall. My internal clock does not re-set as easily as most peoples for some reason. So I can sympathize with your children. I am normally up by 5 am without an alarm clock but for the next few weeks I have to use one. And then force myself to try to get to sleep by 11 at the latest.
As for the title… it does not grab me right off, but then all I can think of is Suvive the Night or the Heat of the Night. Don’t know why those popped into my head.
Heat of the Night is great, but I think that was a television series. But I see a trend, finding something to go with Night.
Time changes…I always think I’ll breeze through, then I don’t. Love the longer days and lighter evenings. And, for some odd reason, I’m sleeping much later in the morning…weird. Hope it lasts–sleep is not my best thing.
Titles….ughh. Sometimes they are obvious to me–other times, I can’t get a handle on them.
Angel On the Lam, of course:) sorry, can’t turn off the silly switch:)
36 Hours is good–it has that tense feeling to it.
Broken Trust
Run
Oh heck, I need more coffee…..
Thanks Deborah — people seem to think that 36 Hours is pretty good, and it is a short story (well, novella) in an anthology, so maybe it works.
I thought I was the only one having trouble with DST. I toss and turn for hours.
Got Reckless and read it. Awesomeness!! Can’t wait for the next Lucy/Sean story.
How about Just One Night or Until the Morning? or Survive the Night?
Thanks Jill! I’m so glad you enjoyed it
We were surprised to wake up the next morning and realize they don’t have it in Hawaii. If some places change and others don’t…well that just messes with my mind. :O
Arizona doesn’t change either. Living in Vegas, so close to the state line, I’m perpetually confused–it makes scheduling events a total crap shoot:)
I always enjoy reading your posts about your writing process, Allison.
I share your dislike for DST. This year in particular seems bad. Both my kiddos are off kilter and grumpy. So, me too. I’d much rather have the dark at supper instead of in the morning when we’re trying to get going.
Wish I could think of a snazzy title for you. I do like the Night Run suggestion. But 36 hours is good too. Carries that tension with it that promises a heart-thumping read.
Thanks Sheri! Why is it that our kid’s moods affect us so much? Why couldn’t it be the other way around? I’m generally very happy … unless I’m stressed. LOL.
Hi Allison,
LOVE the baseball photo! That is a keeper
I don’t have the magic touch for book titles. My publisher almost always changes my titles for one reason or another.
My husband Dan took it, then did the effects in photoshop.
Angel’s Night?
One Night Angel?
I already ordered Reckless but I have 5 books from the library that I have to read first (and only two weeks to read them plus I have a full time job.)
Sounds like my reading life!
Thank you!
Hey Allison~
I’m glad someone else commented on the time change! This year it’s really kicked my ass. I look at the time and it seems WAY off from what I think it should be. Can’t seem to get over the tired-time-change adjustment as quickly either.
Your new story sounds intriguing. I like the play on Angel (without it sounding like an inspie) so maybe a suspense word pairing. Reckless Angel. Relentless Angel. Angel’s Vengeance. Angel under Attack. So, after writing all those off the top of my head I think ’36 Hours’ works perfectly.
LOL — I think everyone likes 36 Hours. It’s not perfect, but it works. I don’t know if I want to use Angel because people might think it’s paranormal …
Congrats on book
I hate DST. My body likes ST much better. Now that we have more DST, ugh. Course no one seems to ask us when they make these decisions.
I’m not in love with 36 Hours. How about something like
Alive Til Morning
or something with Morning in the title. That gives it a little hope that things are going to be okay.
