For almost twenty years, my husband and I have collected a Christmas tree ornament a year. The first year of our marriage, friends gave us ornaments to get us started and I had a few that my daughter had made.

When my husband and I decorate the tree, each ornament has its own story. We often laugh about some of the places we got the ornaments and reminisce about other Christmases as we decorate the tree each year. It’s a special tradition we both love, Christmas music playing in the background and as we dig out the ornaments.Fortunately, we have high ceilings in our 1915 house so we have a big tree, because we have collected a lot of ornaments over the years. I love al
l of them, a few are a true favorite like the one that our puppy took outside. That puppy grew up and died. But the cloth ornament still has a smear of mud on it from its backyard trip in Scout’s mouth all those years ago.
Quite a few years ago, my daughter, two stepdaughters and I decided to make Christmas stockings like the one my husband’s mother had made back in the 1950s. It was fun to copy the style and personalize them. These are definitely a favorite and always a joy to get out each year. This year my older granddaughters and I  made cloth wreaths, cutting strips of Christmas fabric and tying them on a metal wreath frame. It is my favorite decoration this year. I love remembering the time spent making the wreaths with them.

We drove up into the Little Rockies to cut our tree a few weeks ago.We always take our three Springer Spaniels and this year it was so nice we had a picnic, although it was a little cold out. The best part though was coming home and decorating the tree.
The lighting of the tree is always one of my favorite moments of the year. Add Christmas music, snow, prettily wrapped presents under the tree and holiday treats and I’m ready. How about you? Do you have a favorite decoration that means something to you? Or a favorite tradition this season?

What a lovely post. You brought back memories of some of the personal things me and my siblings had on our tree growing up. (Which is a special treat for me.) =o)
Our little tree has three wooden elf musicians that I have from that childhood tree. It also has a paper ornament my daughter made in 1st grade – with her picture in the center. And several she made with pipe cleaners and beads. Plus, the ornaments she bought for us on her first solo plane trip back to Michigan. All very special to me.
B.E., those are my favorite kind of ornaments! I love trees with ones you know the kids have made over the years.
You must love putting up your tree every year so you can pull out these memorable pieces. How wonderful. Wooden elf musicians!! Those must be adorable.
Thanks for stopping by.
I love Christmas! Thanks for sharing your Christmas traditions!
Your post is so bittersweet. Every ornament holds a memory. Really, I feel this is what Christmas is truly all about.
Thank you for sharing, BJ. Reading this was a great way to start my morning.

HI Josie,
Thank you. This IS what Christmas is about. All the memories of other Christmases and the excitement for the ones to come.
It is such a wonderful time to count our blessings.
Christmas just isn’t Christmas until I break out my son’s Spiderman ornament. He has always been a serious superhero guy–still is. Now he draws them, and his art is amazing. But, that ornament just is him…:)
I love it, Deborah!!
All it takes is one ornament to make Christmas, huh!
Merry Christmas!
Love the homemade decorations, B.J. They are so special, particularly as the kids get older and aren’t doing so many crafts at school. I love getting mine out each year.
Happy holidays!
The homemade ones are the best!
I love the homemade ornaments and the ones with special meaning. Each year I get the kids an ornament that reflects something about their year.
The ornament that we talk about the most is an ornament that I don’t have. On our honeymoon – 28 years ago – I saw a little wire snowflake in a museum gift shop. It was only two dollars, and I wanted to get it. However, my husband offered to make one just like it for me when we got home.
I’m still waiting for it.
Hope, getting the kids an ornament that reflects their year is a great idea.
Love your story about the snowflake.
Maybe next year huh.
It seems the only ornaments that make it on the tree these past years are the “special” ones. My girls specifically do not want the “balls and old type”. Of course, there is the one ornament they now both “hate”, but the Bob and Larry Veggietales ornament goes up, I just put it in the back.
This is the first year my 16yo has expressed any “demand” about decorations. With it being the first time in 10 years I don’t have some type of family event here, I decided not to decorate this year. However the one thing she wanted up, the stockings. So, up they went.
The stockings will be great!!
Have a very merry Christmas!! Thanks for sharing. Hope your daughter gets something great in her stocking.
Lovely post, BJ. My most cherished Christmas possession is my grandmother’s Lladro nativity set she left me when she died 26 years ago.
I’m not the least bit sentimental so I change my tree up all the time. Right now it’s decorated with pink lights, tulle, and sparkly mushrooms.
