Some stories began years before a single word is written.
Thirteen years ago I was newly married and living in the Philippines, having the adventure of a lifetime. Without kids to tie us down, my husband and I spent the weekends and any day off he could get traveling around Southeast Asia on a shoestring budget, taking in the exotic sites. Besides exploring Thailand and Hong Kong, we went all over the Philippines–from the pristine white beaches of Cebu to the verdant rice terraces of Banaue and the lush rainforests in between.
The Philippine islands are spectacular. But for all the nation’s natural beauty, there is some ugliness, too. The poverty in Manila is heart-wrenching. I’ll never forget the street children or the tiny, makeshift huts many families call home. And as Westerners, we were warned that certain pockets of the country weren’t safe to visit–such as the southern islands, where they were having political strife and foreign missionaries were being kidnapped and beheaded.
The contrasts of the place got to me. At the time I was writing magazine articles–mostly fluffy features about restaurants and shopping. But I always thought if I ever wrote something meatier, such as a book, I’d like to set it in the Philippines.
More than a decade later, that desire has become a reality. My new book SCORCHED opens in the Philippines, where the suspense story is set in motion.
SCORCHED features two of my favorite Tracers characters, forensic anthropologist Kelsey Quinn and Navy SEAL Gage Brewer. These two have a history, but at the book’s open they are worlds apart–both in body and spirit. Gage is on a daring rescue mission in the Indian Ocean and Kelsey is leading a human rights dig in the southern Philippines at the site of a brutal massacre. While excavating a mass grave, Kelsey stumbles upon a skeleton that doesn’t fit. Her search for answers leads her back to the United States, where she finds herself at a murder scene and ends up on the run for her life.
Despite their tumultuous past, Gage is the only person she can trust for help. They end up on the run together, both as prime suspects in a murder. Much of the story is about their struggle to unravel the crime, elude the investigators who think they’re guilty, and also dodge the bullets of the real killers, who want them dead.
Writing this story was quite an adventure for me. I got to interview Navy SEALs and forensic anthropologists. I visited a body farm and got to hold human bones for the first time, trying to put myself in the shoes of my main character. It was so much fun writing this novel and I hope readers will enjoy it. I’ve been thrilled with some of the early reviews:
“Dynamite characters, a taut plot and plenty of sizzle.” –RT Book Reviews
“Starts with a bang and never loses its momentum.” –Night Owl Reviews Top Pick
“SCORCHED kicks major butt….Definitely one of The Best Romances of 2012.” –A Tasty Read
I have a free excerpt of SCORCHED posted on my website. And today I’m giving away a signed copy of the book! Leave a comment for a chance to win.

I wouldn’t mind interviewing some SEALS, but a big NO! to the body farm visit. I understand the valuable educational service they provide, but I do not want to see it.
BTW, I’ve seen at least 3 great reviews for Scorched, here’s the link to one:

Thank you, Anne! I really enjoyed the research part, even the body farm
Happy you are seeing good reviews for the book out there. I appreciate the link. Thanks!
Congratulations on the great reviews! I’m so looking forward to Scorched, I’m tossing up whether Kelsey and Gage are my faves, or if that honour still goes to Mia and Ric!
Hmmm, might be time to revisit with them whilst I wait for the postie to come baring my copy of Scorched……
Hi Tanya,
I hope you’ll like this one. Mia plays a role in the story, too.
Have a great weekend!
Wow, Laura! Can I be you for a month or so? Congratulations on your new release! Heading over to Amazon to order my copy!
Thanks, Deb. I had so much fun writing this book. Hope you like!
Ooo, I definitely need to pick me up a copy of this. It sounds awesome, Laura. Congratulations! =o)
Hi B.E., Thanks! I hope you enjoy the story.
Got my copy this morning at the local grocery store. Life is good.
The work Seals do is scary, sometimes what that say is inhumane. Obviously it has to be a career choice. The nightmares you must have afterwards. Congratulations and Thanks to them.
Your book sounds great!!!
I agree with Deb. What fun research!! We are such ghouls!
And what a great setting to begin your book. Can’t wait to read it!
Hi B.J., I don’t mind the icky stuff when it comes to research. Hope you like the book!
I’m glad you could incorporate your living experiences in your book. Scorched sounds intense and exciting. Congrats on the release!
Hi Na, And thank you very much. I love finding a way to weave my life experiences into a story.
Scorched sounds hot! Cannot wait to read it.
Interview a Navy Seal or go to a Body Farm? Seal wins hands down. I have done enough necropsies on animals that were not found right away or after a storm. Though I have to admit to having my own collection of animal bones to use for show and tell when kids come to the clinic.
Hi Linda,
Sounds like an odorous job. And yes, it would be much more fun to talk to a SEAL.
This is why your books are always so wonderful! You obviously do thorough research on your subjects. I have really loved the Tracer series so far (well, all your books really). I have to tell you that my husband still gives me a hard time about when I started reading Twisted while we were in the car and I had to keep stopping during only the first chapter just to breath! haha I am really looking forward to reading Scorched!
Congratulations and thanks for the chance to win, I would love to win a signed copy!
Hi Karen,
Delighted to hear this! I love when readers’ husbands complain that they are distracted or neglecting to cook dinner, etc… because they’ve got their nose in a book. Means I’m doing my job! My husband can relate because I’m always reading while he watches sports.
I hope you will like SCORCHED. It was an adventure to write.
I love the Tracers and can’t wait to read Scorched. But don’t enter me in today’s contest, because I won the book from another site. Thanks, Laura.
Thank you for letting me know! Congratulations on winning the book elsewhere and I hope you like it.
How wonderful that you were able to see so much of that corner of the world during your time in the Philippines. I have been to Knoxville more times than I can count and would truly love to tour the body farm. Maybe someday it will happen. Good luck with Scorched, it sounds awesome.
Thank you. I enjoy traveling so much, always looking for new story and setting ideas.
Sounds great. Its awesome to got the chance to do all that. I would love to be able to tour the world.
Hi, Well traveling was easier before kids came along, but now they are old enough to come along for some fun adventures. We love to see national parks together and I’m hoping they will one day do a student exchange program.
Just started Scorched late last night (Kindle, wonderful for instant gratification!)- boy, it really does begin with a bang! Normally I wouldn’t recommend a romance novel to my husband, but this one I will. I’m beginning to think of your books as really transcending that genre – much more suspense than romance. Excellent job! Oh, and leave me out of the contest – I obviously have a copy on my Kindle.
Hi Heather, Thank you! I’m so glad you are liking it. I enjoyed writing a military character for a change, as opposed to a law enforcement hero. Happy reading!
I’m a total travel whore (and spent a lot of time living in Southeast Asia), so I’ve been to the Phils– there’s some great diving out there! And Boracay is literally heaven on earth. Well, at least it was when there were no real resorts on the island
. Poverty in Manila is bad, but I don’t think it tops that in New Delhi (& environs) or the Pokhara Valley in Nepal.
Clearly, I’m in the wrong field… my ‘research’ consists of transferring really small volumes of clear liquids from one tube to another and hoping I don’t inadvertently break the ~$60K real-time PCR machine instead of talking to Navy SEALs
.
P.S. That getup in the picture is so early ’90s, haha.
Hi Cris, Are you making fun of my outfit? And I’m not even wearing my headband.
Boracay was stunningly beautiful. We went snorkeling there one day and saw these cobalt-blue starfish. Amazing scenery.
As instructed, I’m stopping by to say “hi! Plus a giveaway.”
Hi Roswita, Thanks! I will enter you in the contest. Have a good weekend.
Thanks for sharing. Fun research.
Yes, it was!
Wow, what an amazing job you have done describing your book. I can feel the passion you’ve put in it by the way you tell how it came about. I was completely engaged in your blog post and am looking forward to reading Scorched. I am sold and want a change from thrillers.
Hi Angie,
I hope you will like it! Thanks for stopping by MSW today.
I love when writers use places and situations they have seen and lived in their stories. You can just tell!
Thanks, Jill. I love to read that in books, too. I feel like I’ve traveled to so many places just by reading books with faraway settings.
Definitely looking forward to reading Scorched!
Hi Joyce, Thanks for reading it!
Congratulations on the new book! It looks like an exciting story with a unique setting.
Hi Maureen, Thank you!
“Body Farm”? Don’t know what that is, but it sounds very interesting!!
Best Wishes on the new book!!!
Hi Catherine,
The slang term is “body farm.” What that means is a decomposition research facility where they study rates of decay based on different conditions. It was an interesting place to visit. I really liked their bone collection, where they had every type of animal bone native to the area.
I have read all of your Tracer books and I am looking forward to this one too!
Thank you very much for reading, Shelley. I hope you will enjoy Kelsey & Gage’s book.
I love the Tracers series and can’t wait to read SCORCHED!
Hi Mary, So glad to hear you like the series. I’ve had so much fun writing every book. Hope you enjoy SCORCHED!
The body farm would have given me nightmares. The Navy SEALS on the other hand…
Hi Mary, The Navy SEALs would have given you sweet dreams
Would the body farm be the one at the University of Tennessee? I read a book about that one. It was very interesting! Can’t wait to read this one, cuz it goes on the TBR list whether I win a copy or not-lol.
Hi Amy,
I have not visited the one in Knoxville, TN. That’s the original and now they have them in other regions of the country, too.
Thanks for putting SCORCHED on your TBR list!
I am looking forward to reading “Scorched” Laura, especially to see how you “did” SETTING.
Jan
I love reading books with exotic settings. How wonderful that you got to experience the Philippines in person! Congrats and good luck with Scorched.
I read Scorched right away and LOVED it!!!!
