As I write this blog, I have three major things going on in my life (outside of the kids, which is always like herding cats or juggling knives, depending on the day.)
First, I’m writing a speech for the Desert Dreams conference this weekend in Arizona. When Rocki reads this, she’ll want to strangle me (fortunately, she lives 3,000 miles away) because she’s a staunch believer in writing, rewriting, and practicing speeches. I, on the other hand, usually have an idea, write it on the plane, read it out loud and edit when I get to the hotel, and then deliver something completely different than what I penned. In fact, I have one “stump speech” that I wrote for the New Jersey Romance Writers … and I have yet to give it. However, I’ve started it several times … Anyway, I had to give my speech a title. I called it “Through the Looking Glass.” I figure that’ll cover pretty much anything I want to talk about.
Second, I have a book due May 1. I was making great progress on it until I realized an entire branch of the plot did not work and yesterday I deleted over 6,000 words when that branch broke from the tree. I then wrote over 3,000 words to make up for it, but I’m still 3,000 words short of where I thought I would be. Meaning, I’ll be writing during my trip. This is not to say that I know what the final word count will be — my rough drafts (like this) are generally 70-80K words, and my final draft is generally 100-110K words. But I’m stuck on the ending because of that broken branch. Time to play what if games and see what sticks.
And finally, my 18th book was published on Tuesday.
SILENCED was hell to write, but in the end I was happy with it. When I read the final page proofs I was stunned that the story came together. I had a big picture in my head, but the details stymied me, so when everything was wrapped up I kind of surprised myself.
What surprises me even more, though, is that SILENCED is my 18th published book. I feel like I should know more about this business, that I should understand the hows and whys of decisions–the decisions of readers, of fellow writers, of publishers. And I don’t. I don’t even understand me sometimes … but I suppose I should take that up with my therapist (if I had one.)
SILENCED is the fourth book in the Lucy Kincaid series, but the first book with a new publisher. Last year, I moved from Ballantine who published all 17 of my previous books, to Minotaur/St. Martin’s Press. It was a good move for me, exciting, but scary nonetheless. Change always is.
Change is hard. I’m really going to miss Rocki on this blog. Rocki is a lot like me — we’re stubborn, opinionated, and passionate. Rocki can drive me crazy as much as she makes me happy. I tried to get her to stay, but I think that was more for me than it was for her. As you know, Rocki has another amazing book out this week: BAREFOOT IN THE SAND. It really doesn’t matter if she’s writing romantic suspense or women’s fiction or YA, you know you’re going to get a great story.
Good luck, dear friend. And you’d damn well better write another Bullet Catcher book or your name is mud.
I have some good news to share. Our own Laura Griffin hit the USA Today bestseller list with TWISTED. I can not tell you how thrilled I am! She is an amazingly talented writer. And organized — far more organized than me. I can say that with total honesty because we’ve co-written a couple articles for RT. The final product, I think, has been terrific, but it’s because Laura keeps me focused and directed. (I have a suspicion that she is a plotter, but I like her anyway.) In the RT Book Review newsletter for the June issue, Carol Stacy wrote:
“Allison Brennan and Laura Griffin talk about their new releases (SILENCED and TWISTED respectively) and their experiences writing gritty thrillers with their mom status intact. These “mystery moms” are always amusing when they write an article together, but this time we get a better idea of the duality of their lives.”
And on my own doorstep, SILENCED garnered my first ever Associated Press review. I don’t know all where it was printed, but it’s posted all over cyber news sites. In part:
“Brennan throws a lot of story lines into the air and juggles them like a master. The mystery proves to be both compelling and complex.”
Writing, for me, is always hard during release week, but I’m managing. Tuesday was kind of a waste, but yesterday was better, and today will be better still.
I write all day, take a break when the kids get home, then write at night. Late — usually around midnight or one — I call it quits and unwind with TV. For example, I watched the first six seasons of BONES in three months.
Anyone here watch GRIMM? I was thrilled it was renewed for a second season. And of course, JUSTIFIED’s season three finale was amazing. Can’t wait until next January! I’m currently on season four of NCIS (why, oh why, did I never watch this show before?) And I’m eagerly awaiting the return of HAVEN this summer. What are you happy about in TV land?
And I almost forgot! St. Martin’s created this fabulous trailer for SILENCED. What do you think?

There I was, quietly lying in bed, just checking the post on the iPad, planning to comment later (if I comment on iThings it’ll go to moderation)… when, I thought it was such a good post, I actually turned on the computer at 6 early am before school just to comment!
1) I’m so excited to read SILENCED! I’m glad I got to buy it and I started, buy I’ve been migrainey for two days and haven’t progressed much yet! Still, you know how much I fell in love with Lucy and Sean, and I just want to devour their newest adventure!
2) OMGAWWSOSWEET you writing about Rocki. Like, it made me go aww out loud <3
And 3) You know GRIMM is my latest obsession!!! I liked it at first, but in these last few episodes, I just started to LOVE it in a way that is a little crazy! Pretty sure it was the addition of Rosalee that made it happen! I always told my mom, "You know, I really like GRIMM, Nick is so hot and Monroe is funny and cute and everything that I barely even notice that they don't have an interesting lead." Because, poor Juliette, she's nice, she's just not… she doesn't have the it factor. I guess it’s just that the moment Rosalee walked into the show, she completed a puzzle piece that was missing for me. She was the female lead, the strength, cuteness, attitude that was missed, and the show automatically turned into perfection. Does that make any sense? <3
Oh, I'll have a ps: Sadly, NCIS lost some of it's something something after a while. I used to love it, now I just like it. Though, I LOVE NCIS: Los Angeles. AND, I'm LOVING this season of BONES. And ONCE UPON A TIME. (You need to watch that!) And PRIVATE PRACTICE is my favorite heartbreaking tv hour.
LOL Barbie. I have thought about ONCE several times, but keep avoiding it. I’ll probably regret that! I’m sure NCIS will lose something — after 9 seasons it’s unavoidable — however, I’m only on season 4 and it’s still fantastic. BONES had a dud of season 6, but I’m definitely enjoying #7. And totally agree with you on GRIMM.
Congratulations to you and Rocki for your new releases!
One more week for more Colby!
Better you than I for the speech. I hate speeches. I think I barely passed speech class in both HS and college :p “Silence”, Rocki’s book who’s title is escaping me at the moment and “Twisted” are all on the truck to be delivered to me today :eagerlyawaiting: As for TVland, I am likely the weirdness of “The Finder” which is a spin off from “Bones” and “Unforgettable” . But I still like both NCIS’s and a couple others…
I like THE FINDER too. I love the characters and Walter’s quirkiness. There’s something missing, however. I don’t really like the Marshal, she doesn’t seem integral to the plot, but I really love the teenage gypsy.
Hi Allison, CONGRATULATIONS on the release of SILENCED!! I am so excited for you about this book. It combines old and new–a character we know and love, but the excitement of a new look provided by a new publisher.
And fantastic news about the AP review. Couldn’t agree more. You are the “master” storyteller!!
Hope you have a terrific release week
XOXO
Congrats to both you and Rocki on your new releases and for Laura hitting the list. Way Cool! I think the trailer for Silenced is great. Can’t wait to read the book! Have fun at the Desert Dreams Conference. I drove out to it from San Diego a few years ago and it was really fun.
Hi Linda! It has been a good week for MSW gals!
I’m looking forward to the conference. I’ve found that I really like this conference size — I’ve spoken at Emerald City, NJ, Colorado Gold (fiction writers, not romance), Magnolia, Dreaming in Dallas … I think that’s it. I like to do one small conference a year.
Big week at MSW! Congrats on SILENCED and the amazing reviews, the awesome trailer (love) and your very cool FB fan page. All is good! And, wow, so happy for Laura to hit USA Today. I remember when I did a blurb for her debut novel and knew instantly she was destined for greatness!
About the speech: I have to defend my technique. First of all, I was a trained actress, so I treat a speech as a role. I “memorize” (more or less) a really awesome (if I must say so myself) speech so I can deliver it with the most amount of impact and the least amount of getting lost and off topic. I ad lib in my keynotes, I don’t read and don’t recite, but I know exactly where each thought is leading and why. I think that helps me make a high impact speech, at least it works for me when I’m making a formal address – it appears to the audience that I’m speaking from my heart, with notes to follow. (I don’t do that when giving workshops, which is a different animal completely.) Since I’ve media trained a hundred executives on how to give a keynote, I know this is the way that works for a lot of people. Writing up notes the night before and winging it is an art and skill that you have, Allison, but I (and few others) do not. I hope someone who has seen me give a keynote will back me up on this, LOL.
I am going to miss the blog so much! Wish I could go to Desert Dreams and hear you give your marvelous speech! xo
I’ve tried doing it your way, Rocki, because you are so compelling in why it’s the best way, but it doesn’t work for me. (I do have that one great stump speech I’ve never given! LOL.)
Congrats on Silenced Allison! I don’t usually love book trailers, but the one for Silenced was really cool! My new fav tv show is Scandal with Kerry Washington.
Oh, haven’t seen that show! Great title, though
The trailer is cool–
As I was reading the first part of your post the phrase “Flying by the seat of her pants” kept popping into my head. BAHAHAHAHAHA
As far as television– I love Bones too, and Haven. We haven’t been watching Grimm because it’s on the same time as Supernatural and, I think, Fringe. BUT, I figured during the summer when repeats are on I’ll be able to catch them or wait for DVD. It’s nice to hear when you write. It’s odd but I think I wrote more, and on a schedule, when my kids were small then now. They are 18, 17 and 12– I swear I never know when there is going to be a “crisis” and it’s busier now then ever before!
I hear you Brenda! The younger kids take time, but it’s more structured. The older kids — argh! They are the, “Hey Mom can you drop everything and take me here and pick me up at time specific?”
Congrats on your new release! I watch the same shows as you Justified, Grimm and Haven, enjoy all three.
We have great taste, don’t me?
Wow! The trailer rocks! You know I love the cover. I think they did a fabulous job with it.
Good luck with the speech and the deadline. I’m coming down to the wire, too, so I’m feeling the crunch as well. ((hugs))
Sending you ((hugs)) right back. One of the best things about you and the other gals here is that you all understand about D-Day! … I thought SMP did a great job with the whole package, and I’m crossing fingers that the book does well enough that they want more!
Allison, I think pantsers give speeches like we write. And that can be totally entertaining–or a bust. LOL
That trailer is awesome! I love that SMP/Minataur is getting behind the Lucy books and supporting you. And terrific news on the reviews. SILENCED is going to be another hit!
I can’t even contemplate Rocki leaving. I tear up every time I think about it.
I can hear the wheels turning in your brain here half-way cross the country. There’s a new branch growing, leafing out, and ready to bear fruit even as I type this. Yeah. I have absolute faith in you. Go get ‘em, girl!
Great taste!
No, Silver, repeat after me: ORGANIC WRITER. I hate the word “pantser” — gives me the shivers.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just threaded through a subplot that I really like and I think it’ll come together at the end … I hope! :/
OOOH. I like that. Organic Writer. *writes 100 times* I also like the term Puzzler, which probably describes my process. There are times when I write in scenes and then need to fit them together, much like a jigsaw puzzle. Glad you’ve found a new subplot but I knew you would. Your mind is all twisty that way.
Congrats on the new release and I know you’ll ace the speech.
I watch Grimm when I remember and watched one episode of Justified, now I’m going back to season one and starting from the beginning!
Good move to start from the beginning — there are only 13 episodes per season, you’ll get through them fast!
Allison, congrats on Silenced! I love the trailer. As for TV land, we’re in May Sweeps and summer season is upon us. I couldn’t get into Grimm after the second episode. And since my VCR doesn’t work anymore (I can’t record anything), I would have to watch episodes online or ON Demand. I’m excited for Bones to return for season 8–I’m behind two episodes and will catch up this weekend. P.S. I’ll miss Rocki too. But I loved her comment to my post. Good luck with the speech!
Thanks Kristen — GRIMM started slow for me, too, but after about the 3rd or 4th episode, I was hooked. I love Nick. He’s a great character, perfect for the role. And I love Monroe. I think they were trying to get their grounding, and I really like where they’re going.
Great about Silence… it is on the TBR pile but when 5 authors that I really enjoy reading put books out at the same time it makes it hard to choose. Yours and Twisted are vying for what gets read next.
Definitely think ‘organic writer’ sounds much better too. When I do have to give talks I do them like you do as well. I write down a speech, even will go to trouble of knowing the lines but when I get up there to give it… usually not the same as what I wrote. Maybe that is why I did not get an A in speech.
TV land for the summer has both reward and heartache this year.. the end of Closer is just six episodes away and have to wait until Jan for more Justified. But there are always NCIS reruns on as well as Law and Order.
Television is always bittersweet for me, too. I was so ticked off when they cancelled DETROIT 1-8-7 because I loved that show!
Allison,
Congrats on your 18th book. I bought Silenced yesterday. My belated birthday gift to myself. So thank you and your publisher for bring it out in April. I almost done reading it and it’s got me on edge. So many questions . I see them as future plots for future Lucy’s books. But please do me favor and don’t get Lucy and Noah together. Please let her stay with Sean . There good together. They are like a super couple!
When is the next book “Stalked” of Lucy K coming out? On the back of the book I bought it says ” coming spring 2013″ but inside the book on a page it says “coming soon November 2012″. Kinda of confusing.
My 2 shows that I kinda got hooked on are on ABC on Thursday “Missing” and
“Scandal”. Both are really good shows. Oh thanks for getting me into Justified. I got hooked.
Good luck with your speech. I hope you have time to finish your book on time. Crossing my fingers for you. Have a good weekend.
Hi Rosemarie!
First, Sean and Lucy may have some rocky roads ahead, but they’re together and I’m not going to anger my readers by splitting them up. I’m just going to say–it’s not all going to be fun and games. But in the end, they’ll be stronger.
STALKED will be out on October 30, unless something gets changed. I hope not! STOLEN, the next Lucy book, will be out in the Spring of 2013.
Thanks Allison for clearing that up. Stalked will be on my to buy list now. can’t wait.
Just finished reading Silenced . Oh wow it was great . Like I said before I have some many questions but I don’t want to give anything way in case some people haven’t read the book yet. But I have a feeling some of them will get answered in the next couple of books.
I’m so glad that Sean and Lucy have some staying power. Yes they have to have some up and downs like any real couple. But Lucy deserves some happiness in her life and Sean brings that for her. So thank you!
Congrats, on Silenced cause I know you have another best seller on your hands.
Thanks Rosemarie! I did leave open some questions that will be resolved in STOLEN, but they all relate to Sean and/or the Senator.
Congrats on the new release! And good luck with the speech
I love NCIS and have watched it since it started and now Jamie Lee Curtis is on it!!!
I enjoy CSI Miami still, haven’t given up on them and laugh at The Big Band show.
Happy release Day and congratulations!
No spoilers!!!
… I never liked CSI Miami because I don’t like David Caruso. I know, I know, I’m weird :/ … (Sorry Anna! … my pal Anna is a huge Caruso fan.)
Woo hoo you have made my day. I had not heard Grimm had been renewed. That is a great show that really takes yoir imagination for a ride. It is so funny to hear you talk about your fave tv shows. Becuase they are mine too. Love Bones, NCIS, Grimm, American Horror ( how great Adam Lavine will be on it next season) Justified and so on. Must be why I love your books so much … Great minds and all.
Yeah! We’re very much alike. I love AHS, am very excited about next season. A very smart, psychologically scary show. Can not WAIT for an asylum! This is one of the shows I wish I’d created.
I used to love NCIS…until I started working for the real thing
lol! unfortunately, I don’t have an Abby to turn to (although I did get to meet Paulie Perette a couple of years ago)…and no Tony to oggle (boo hoo)
my guilty pleasures for TV when they are on are Army Wives, Top Chef, Master Chef and Grey’s Anatomy
JEALOUS!!! Yes, me, jealous
I’ll have to live vicariously through you
lol – we can always tell when there is a NCIS marathon on TV because we get multiple calls about how to join, and people wanting to send crime scene stuff to Abby…
I’m so on top of the big happenings at MSW–finished TWISTED last Tuesday (loved it!), ~3/4 of the way through SILENCED (purposely leaving the last 1/4 for the gym tomorrow– and also loving it), and have Rocki’s ready to go as soon as I’m done
. Well-deserved congratulations all around!
I do (truly titillating, of course!) science talks instead of speeches, but I’m definitely a meticulous planner. I outline my thoughts & schematise my slides on paper, then make the slides (PowerPoint, Illustrator, & I are in a long-term committed relationship), then I write out what I plan to say for each slide as a complete speech, and put said speech in bullet form in the ‘Notes’ section of the slides. To top it all off, I go over the slides with my advisor, give a practice talk to my labmates, and go through it so many times I could probably give my talk in my sleep. And, still, I’m not quite sure what will come out of my mouth when I actually give said talk! All the preparation is because I’m one of those people terrified of public speaking, but it turns out that I’m pretty good at winging it. Or, at least, I haven’t made it so my advisor can’t deign to show her face in the department, haha. On the up side: I’ve only one more talk to give– my dissertation defence in a few months! Then I’m going to be Dr. Book/Travel Whore and stay far away from talks & speeches.
I have you beat on the BONES front– I watched seasons 2, 3, & 4 over one long weekend to get caught up before season 5 started. ‘Twas definitely an overdose, but I was on a mission! Season 6 was a drag, and I’ve only watched a couple of episodes of 7, but I really think they should end it soon while it’s still on a bit of a high note. That and THE MENTALIST are about the only two things I watch on the telly (well, online streaming); I’ve watched my fair share of the various CSIs, but one can only take so much fake pipetting and unbalanced centrifuges! [You really cannot stick a single tube in the centrifuge without counter-balancing it-- it makes a horrific grinding noise and the machine vibrates like crazy. And DNA profiles don't look like that. And if you can get the mass spec to tell you those kinds of things, any lab would love you to run their analyses for them! Just sayin'. They should hire me as their science consultant
]
Thanks Cris! However, your outline is giving me the willies
On BONES … season 6 SUCKED but season 7 is definitely better. I haven’t watched CSI in 5 or 6 years. I keep meaning to try THE MENTALIST, but haven’t done it yet. Little known secret …. I have always wanted to write for television. Never actively pursued it, but it has been a dream since I was 13 and wanted to write for the soap operas
Congratulations on the book! The trailer looks amazing.
I am more into trutv and crime shows. I love Criminal Minds but never seem to be readinv much anymore. I read so much that I nevrr have time, lol.
