Yes, I have one. An addiction, that is. No, it’s not cigarettes or alcohol or any of the other things normally associated with addiction. It’s NUMBERS. Yes, I said numbers. It started in November, got worse in December and went over the edge in January!
Hello, my name is Debra and I am a numberoholic. I have written and had published about a 100 books and not once have I ever really worried about lists. Yes, of course, I was acutely aware that making a list equated to sales (numbers, numbers, numbers) but I understood my midlist place in the world of publishing so I didn’t obsess about it. I either made a list or I didn’t. End of story.
Nearly two years ago my life changed. We won’t talk about that today because you’ve all heard it before (yada yada yada). But that “change” caused me to rethink my career and fortunately for me an opportunity sat right there in front of me: Indie Publishing (self-publishing). IT IS AMAZING!!!!! Did you hear that? IT IS AMAZING!!!! Thank you Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords, iBooks, et al for making it possible. Thank you indie pioneers (all those wonderful authors who took that big leap already) for forging the way. It is incredible. I love that an opportunity so fantastic, so accessible is available to all. Did I say awesome? Yes, it’s awesome and I am enjoying it more than words can say.
Time out for a shameless promo: I took the plunge with my Faces of Evil series (that you
have heard about over and over and over). OBSESSION and IMPULSE are out there now in e-book and in print (thank you CREATESPACE). POWER will be available next month. If you haven’t already gotten OBSESSION, go here now http://tinyurl.com/7bnbewe and IMPULSE can be found here http://tinyurl.com/7qyrc25. Don’t delay! You still have time to read them both before POWER is available. Also, my awesomely talented sisters here at MSW have just released the first MSW anthology, GUNS & ROSES. It will be available on Amazon, BN and all any moment!
Back to my addiction. Once I self-published my books, I realized that having final say over the cover and content and price weren’t the only perks. I could go to my accounts and SEE the sales. Right now. An hour from now. Tonight. Tomorrow. I can see exactly how many books are purchased any time I want to log in. That’s so cool! I now understand more than ever what the rankings mean. And I’m on lists! Lists with an s! I’m pretty sure I’ve never been on more than one at a time. I’ve even been on the Top 10 Indie Best Seller list! What an honor! Please check out www.IndieReader.com, it’s an awesome site. I have found a tremendous number of fantastic sites like that! Many, many, many sites who are immensely supportive of Indie authors.
Yes, my name is Debra and I’m a numberoholic. I openly admit that I have exposed my poor husband to this same addiction. We are in this together. For more than two months now we have been tracking rankings on lists, mentions on websites, and actual sales. My head is filled with numbers! I am convinced that a whole new occupation must be created to deal with this syndrome: Counseling for Author Number Addiction.
The whole process is amazing and freeing and terrifying! One day you may be up, up, up only to be down, down, down the next. But it is worth every moment of terror! I so appreciate the support of the readers! YOU are the folks who really made this possible for me and all other authors, whether traditionally or indie published. YOU ARE AWESOME!
Unfortunately, at this time there is no cure for my addiction. But my husband and I are happily suffering through it together. Tell me about your
most recent read! Is reading your addiction? If it is, I have something for you! Everyone who comments today will be added to the free advance digital copy list for POWER. So, if you haven’t gotten OBSESSION and IMPULSE yet, be sure to grab them. After you comment today, email me through my website (www.debrawebb.com) with your preference, Kindle or Nook. And, because I know just how awesome the new GUNS & ROSES anthology is, one lucky commenter today will get a digital copy of the anthology! I will gift the winner through Amazon or BN, your choice! Now, gotta go check my numbers…

I’m currently on Nalini Singh Psy-Changeling series Play of Passion. My obsession if finishing series. I TOTALLY stalk author’s sites to see when the next book is out. I’ve been known to pre-order and stay up half the night waiting for it to load.
Jeana, we are definitely in this together!
I just finished up the Dream Man Trilogy by Kristin Ashley. I really enjoyed those books and liked them so much I already want to do a re-read!
Kris, don’t you just love when you find a book that you love so much you want to read it again and again!
Hello there Debra and thank you so much for the opportunity to win – WOO HOO – I have an addiction, too – well, several, actually – books – coffee – books – music- books – TV – books – the internet – books – well, I think that you get the general idea – how cool that you have “gone indie” – and Jeana, I, too, totally love, among other books, Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series – however, I have a serious case of the jitters since I can’t find where my boxes of books are that have the next installments of the series for me to read – LOL -
Felicia, you need more bookcases! That’s what I keep telling my husband even as he’s building new ones–there will never be enough room for all the great books!
I am def addicted to books! My husband thinks something is wrong if I am not reading in some way, lol! He asked if I could tell him how many I had read in the last six months and I drew a blank………..too many!
Most recent read is an ebook by the name of Hemovore by Jordan Castillo Price. So far I am enjoying it quite a bit (stayed up way too late last night!)
Kassandra, your husband is sweet to understand! Is he a reader?
Since I always have to have a book with me and I whip it out anytime I’m not doing anything I would say I’m addicted.
I just finished Definitely Not Mr. Darcy
By Doornebos, Karen last night. It’s about a reality show which recreates regency England. The heroine is American. It was mildly amusing, but no laughs. Knew the “twist” from the start.
Started Kerrelyn Sparks’ Sexiest Vampire Alive after I finished Darcy and it’s the quick, light, fun fluff I expected.
Anne, I have a friend who writes the “Darcy” books! Her name is M.K. Baxley. I think she has self-pubbed three!
As soon as the link is up, my addiction will be the G and R antho from the MSW ladies. Can’t wait for new stories from the ladies.
So glad to hear your indie pub ventures are soaring! You deserve it. The new books are awesome!
Thanks, Catherine!
LOVE those covers! Congrats on all your successes — and have fun with the numbers
— me hopes they’re all dollar signs from stellar sales!
Thanks, Lori!!!!
I definitely have a reading addiction (thank you Kindle, you make it possible to feed my addiction without having to give up a place to sleep to house all my books). There are currently 167 unread books on my Kindle, and that’s not counting all the great stuff coming out over the next few months! How am I supposed to concentrate on my dissertation research, write my dissertation, and put a dent in that TBR pile? [One guess as to which of those activities generally wins out...
]
I have a confession to make: apart from being a book whore (I will read anything!), I’m a streaker: I find an author or series I like, and I read the entire backlist. And if it’s an ongoing series, I finish the last book and immediately want the next one
P.S. POWER comes out right around my birthday… excellent way to celebrate!
Wow, Cris! You are so cool!
I have two addictions. The first one is animals and fortunately my job helps with that one. My second addiction is books most definately…. and has gotten worse now that I can afford to buy them. As for what I am reading/have read over the weekend, Elizabeth Naughton and now Mary Burton’s newest one Before She Dies. And most definately will be getting the two published Faces of Evil this week to read. I thought I had not read your work before but was wrong…. have read Anywhere She Hides and Faceless, Nameless and Traceless a few years back. Look forward to reading more of your work and am truly inspired by your courage to overcome. Kepp writing and we will keep reading.
Thanks, Linda!
Linda, I’m with you on the animals, too!
may those numbers just keep soaring! what a delightful addiction to have….
Fingers crossed, Sophie!
I just finished both Obsession and Impulse. Great stories, I loved the characters and I look forward to the next book Power.
Thank you, Ashley!!!!!
I have been an avid book reader since I can remember. I used to grab my moms romance novels and stay up all nite reading them. Now I have boxes of books everywhere. Thank god for the kindle now. Lol. I’m always looking for new authors. And Debra Webb I am glad I have found you. I love the Face of Evil series and are looking forward to when Power comes out!
Kris, you are a jewel!
My obsession is reading. I read whenever and where ever I can. I lose myself in the book I am reading and can’t hear or see anything else. I love Obsession and Impulse!!! Looking forward to Power.
Thanks, Candy!
I am a new HUGE fan of yours Mrs. Webb!
I just got a kindle for christmas from my mother & came across OBSESSION when I was looking up books from another similar author. Since you like numbers, I’d like to let you know that you are in my Top 3 favorite authors!
Yay, Nicole!!!! Thank you!
I’m so excited for you and your new addiction, Deb! You deserve it all!
My only addiction is my granddaughter. I can never get enough!
Thank you, Karin! That is one addiction I can’t wait to have!!!!!!
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, especially through such a difficult time. Very thankful and appreciative you are still able to provide such great stories for us to read and enjoy. God bless.
You are too sweet, DeeAnn! Thank You!
Addictions? Uhm…blogs. I have a whole list that I visit every day! (Even if I don’t comment, I read them!!!!) If I could wean myself off blogs, I could get soooo much done. LOL
I admire you, Deb, for taking the initiative and “plunge” into self-publishing. I wish I were so brave.
Just do it, Silver! Dive into self-publishing, I mean. You’re not allowed to wean off this blog!!!
LOL Y’all would have to drive me away with a stick and I’m not sure even that would work.
I am addicted to reading. There is a running joke in my house about my family “feeding the addiction”. For birthday’s and holidays my family always buys me Amazon gift cards to “feed the addiction”. By the way, loved Obession. Still need to get Impulse. I am currently reading Wild Neveda Ride by Sandy Sullivan. Its very sexy. Thanks for Power.
That would be Wild Nevada Ride-sorry for the misspelling
Colleen, glad you liked OBSESSION! Now you gotta get IMPULSE so you’ll be ready for POWER!
Like many others, I am also addicted to reading. I read from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. 6 days/week. Then I leave email for the authors whose books I enjoy, followed by reviews on as many websites as I can. I have several authors who I follow daily both on their websites and on Facebook, always waiting to see what’s coming out next. Debra, after “Obsession,” you are on that list. Love your writing and would LOVE to have a signed copy of your book.
Ellen, I am honored to be on your list!
great interview, Deb!
Thanks, Laura!
Wonderful interview – congratulations on your well deserved Warrior Woman Award!
I am totally addicted to books and have been as long as I can remember. Family and friends help the addiction with bookstore gift cards.
Mary, aren’t those the best gifts ever?!
Ok, it looks like the link is up? It says “published 2/20″…
Hi! Wonderful post! Im definitely addicted to books. I have 1000s. A good 500 in paper back and the rest in ebook. It drives my family nuts having my books all over the place. lol My dad got irritated when i was younger and turned our closet into a library. lol It worked for awhile, until i started bringing more books home and ran out of room. lol
Right now, i stuck on Laurann Dohners Species series. They are so good!
Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful day!
Wow, Shadow! I’m impressed! You have more books than me!
Congrats Debra! I have to say though also your new Indie covers are great too!
Reading is my obsession/addiction. Yeah i go through cycles of things i get addicted too. I think it’s part of my ADHD. For a number of years it was photography and now for the past 3 yrs i guess it’s been reading. Lots of reading lol If i had to guess i have about 3,000 books in my house and almost 500 on my kindle. Last thing i read was part 6 of a illustrated novel by new author Jenn LeBlanc. She is a photographer so the photos in the book are hers. It’s pretty cool. The photos help tell the story.
Glad your addiction is fun for you! lol
Lisa B
Hey Lisa, I love photography too!
I enjoy your books!
I am addicted to books.
Chey, I like that addiction!
Reading/books are definitely my addiction/obsession!! Like Cris i’m kind of a streaker to! Last fall it it was Kathy Reichs & John Connolly. Right now i’m just getting into the Dave Robicheux series. I also have been downloading all the Murder She Writes ladies books onto my Kindle
Thanks, Erin!
Hi Debra,
I’m currently reading Shiloh Walker’s “If You See Her.” I’m enjoying her series and can’t wait for book three.
Hey Jane, I haven’t read the series but I love the title. I’ll have to check it out!
Oh yes, reading is certainly my addiction.
Evidence is my bookshelves. Now I have a KOBO and it is quickly becoming full.
Right now (I am waiting for your books to come soon Debra!!) I am reading Dear R Koontz “The Husband” and I just said to my husband: “I can’t put it down!!!”
Hey Janet! Sounds like a great book!
I JUST received your books in the mail!
And, I am starting on “Obsession”!!!
Thanks so much. You are a very generous spirit!
Reading is definitely my addition and one I have no intention of kicking. In fact I keep adding to it happily. I’m currently reading Trouble by Sandra Brown. There’s some action going down as we speak and I need to get back to it.
Happy release to the Gun & Roses Antholoy. Some of the authors, including you Debra I’m familiar with, but others I want to read. This is a great chance for everyone to do so.
It sure is, Na s!
I have 2 addictions. Of course reading is the first and cookbooks are the 2nd. I have hundreds of them. Not that I cook that much, just love to read the recipes. I know, my husband doesnt understand either. Just finished Making Waves by Tawna Fenske. Loved it.
Trish, I love cookbooks too! I look for them at EVERY yard sale or estate sale I peruse!
Addiction…reading is something of a problem. Chocolate…please don’t take it away. Lately, I have been obsessed with quiet time. Not lots of it but I get very angry when I don’t get at least a little every day. I can’t function properly without it. In fact, I have started putting together floral arrangements just to create that 10-15 minutes of quiet time each day. One problem, now I am getting addicted to flower arranging!!! UGH!
Jen, I LOVE FLOWERS! For Valentine’s Day, I insisted my husband get me the bundled flowers so I could arrange them in my own vase. I like doing that and it’s way cheaper!
Congratulations on all the books! That’s very impressive. Reading is my addiction.
You’re in good company here at MSW!
I also have a reading addiction that gets in the way of doing the dishes and making dinner on time… I love it
Congrats on the list(s)!!
Debra I love your writing. I have Obsession but not Impulse. As you may have guessed my obsession is definitely reading.
I can’t lie my current reading addiction is Lynn Hagens Brac & Zeus pack series. I’m a big book addict and if I love a book I reread them so I have books every where. I love your book and I’m always waiting for the next one to come out.
Of course, reading is my addiction! I wouldn’t stalk, ehm, I mean visit this blog otherwise, would I?
My last read was actually a the latest Rough Riders book from Lorelei. Very good stuff!
I’ve been reading your books for awhile and really loved Obsession and Impulse! Can’t wait for Power to be out. Just finished reading Lisa Gardner’s Catch Me! And reading is definitely my obsession!!!!
i commented there, i adore you
