Like other female mystery writers, my fear factor goes up several notches if ever I feel that I’ve shortchanged the men in my stories.
If their actions and words don’t ring true, I’ll be disappointing too many very important readers who — ahem — also happen to be men.
Many men don’t read romance. But they will read romantic suspense–
If it’s done right.
I’m very proud of this blog, if for one reason: all the women who write it get it right, when they write about men.
If I doubt any scene I’ve written, I read it out loud to my husband. He’ll be the first one to say: “Nope! No guy would say that…” or “Take that out. It’s too girly.”
Our genders different body parts, for sure. We’re also wired differently. There are reasons women have pity parties, whereas men just hide in their caves.
I wonder if my two favorite male mystery and suspense writers – Martin Cruz Smith and John LeCarre — go through this process, too?
I do know one thing: they get women right.
Something tells me their wives have something to do with it.
In fact, here’s a review I gave my favorite LeCarre novel, The Night Manager. I would thoroughly suggest you pick it up and try it.
I’m glad to see that the new James Bond movie series is getting right, too. The scene below, from Casino Royale, the very first Bond movie with Daniel Craig, is a perfect example of this.
Watch it and enjoy,

I like how you read snippets to your husband — I remember in one of my earlier books, the hero noticed my heroine’s lips (I don’t use a lot of description, I usually focus on one or two features that stand out to the other character.) My husband read the book and said, “He’d never notice her lips. Or if he did, it’d be after her boobs, her butt, her legs, her eyes …” LOL.
Sounds just like a man!!
I can always tell when I’ve got a love scene right, because Martin gets a bit “frisky,” shall we say.
TMITMITMITMI I know, I know…

lalalalalalalallalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalal–i cant hear you, lalalalallalalalalalalala
covering my ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW, I’ve always thought Karin does male dialogue amazingly well. Probably because she lives with alpha males! But there’s always a ring of truth in her dialogue that I admire.
Yeah, you’re right!
And let me tell you: with that group of guys to crib from, if K-Tab can’t get it right, then NO ONE CAN.
LOL,
J
I just recap my guys’ dinner conversation.
I can just imagine what dinner at your house is like….
(And I’ve been there…but only when it was a gal pal nosh)
2 funnee,

Oh. My. God.
My FAVORITE scene from one of my FAVORITE movies. I love everything about that scene. His big sexy hands, the way he sucks her fingers, the fact that he reaches up and turns the hot water on. As anyone who reads my books knows, I’m *big* on shower scenes. That one is a CLASSIC!
Thanks for sharing. Now I’ll go back and read the rest of the blog because I went straight to that clip and watched it three times, LOL! xo
HA HA!
Rocki, you would love it (especially the finger-sucking part.)
I’m glad we live in an age when James Bond doesn’t have to be a parody or a ‘chismo douche, aren’t you?
Here’s to the softer, gentler, Bond,
xx J
Instead of one particular scene, I’ll just go with anything between Rocki’s Jack and Lucy, and Lori’s Julie Collin’s and Tony Martinez!!
I hear ya, Catherine! The both write great stuff!
; )

Yep – What Catherine said!
Wow, Hope! I’m sure both appreciate the extra thumbs up!
: )

I love that shower scene! I love DC in this movie, he is so damn effing hawt!
Karin, next Bond movie we go to see TOGETHER. (For some stupid reason, Martin just doesn’t appreciate DC the same way I do….I guess that’s a GOOD thing!)
xxxx J
You are just too awesome, Josie! I’d have to write three blogs to ever mention all the great scenes from this group!
That’s my point, Deb! It’s like a compendium of great dialogue, plot, and sex scenes– and it’s not just what we would like men to say and do, but what they actually say and do….
Too much fun!
xx J
Ah, Julie and Tony – I was SO happy to revisit them in the upcoming short story.
One of the best compliments a writer can receive is writing the opposite gender well
That’s the joy of writing short stories, Lori, isn’t it? Putting them back in hot water — together!
Always in awe of you,
– Josie
