I am knee deep in a scene that is wrenching my guts out, it’s so heartbreaking, and I just realized it’s my Thursday… so let’s have some fun and cheer me up! I want to get to know you all better, and what easier way to do that than to ask some questions? And… to add some adventure to that idea, I came up with a game of tag. I have no idea if this will work, but what the heck, let’s try.

There are 8 questions… everyone who answers them all is eligible for a chance to win a $50 Visa online gift card. (Winner’s name is going to be randomly drawn from all legitimate entrants, and the winner’s card is going to be ordered on Sunday–hopefully it will arrive in time for those of you who might be going to the RWA con.) HOWEVER… as an added bonus, if you send someone here and *they* play and then mention YOUR name… if their name is drawn, you also win. So that would be a $50 online Visa for each of you.

Here are the questions (some of which were blatantly borrowed from this site)–and please do elaborate! You never know… there might be a random drawing for those who go the extra mile. :)

Feel free to cut and paste these into your reply box below:

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book?

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be?

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?)

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies.

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant?

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)

9 ) bonus: Who referred you here for the contest? [You must name them here in the same comment as your answers for them to be eligible!]

Okay… go. :)

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be? As much as I don’t want to live in New York, Roarke’s mansion in the IN DEATH books would do it for me! (Or Southfork Ranch, even if it is in DALLAS. *bwahaha*

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?) I have two and they both refer to a certain part of the female anatomy. One starts with “C”, the other “P”. I used them in writing, but still cringe a bit and never use them in practice.

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?) The one I use the most or the one I like the sound of the most? I’m guilty of “Dude” over-usage. Sad, but true. For some reason, my brain is stuck on “clerestory” as a cool word. (It’s an architectural term.) At even given moment, though, my favorite word is subject to change.

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)
5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be? Flying . . . no, bugs in teeth. Uhm, super hearing . . . no, I’d probably hear bad things about myself and I’m paranoid enough. Uh, super strength . . . uh, nope, I’d probably break everything. I got it, invisibility! Hell, who needs that? Everyone ignores me anyway!
6 ) Name three of your favorite movies. Harry Potter (yeah, I’m lumping them—what of it??), The Incredibles, The Mummy (love me some Brendan Fraser in that one!)

Eve and Roarke’s house from the In Death series – or Magnum PI’s house in Hawaii

3 ) What is your least favorite word?

    Gingerly.

(Why?) It’s overused. My second least favorite word is padded. Ugh. Unless you’re writing a paranormal romance about shifters, it just reads wrong to me, that said, I’m sure I’ve used it at some point.

4 ) What is your favorite word? Retromingent

(Why?) Because a word devoted to the ability to pee backwards totally cracks me up and I’m trying like hell to find a way to work it into an upcoming book :)

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?

    Super metabolism!

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies.

    Gone With The Wind
    True Lies
    The Princess Bride

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant?

I love those mini cookbooks you find at the checkout stands, some are holiday themed or summer themed. Some of the best recipes I’ve ever found are in those little booklets.

My favorite restaurant is anything with lots of meat, so Famous Dave’s or a Brazilian steakhouse where the sexy little gauchos deliver flaming hot meat right to my plate :)

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)

Love My Rifle More Than You – Kayla Williams

2 ) I wouldn’t mind living in Gideon’s mountain cabin (Criminal Minds). It looks so peaceful and it has a gourmet kitchen.

3 ) It’s so bad I won’t type it here. Suffice it to say it starts with a C and refers to the feminine reproductive system.

4 ) Trapezoidal – because it’s just fun to say. Go ahead and say it. You know you want to.

5 ) I want Wolverine’s super power of immediate healing. Then it wouldn’t hurt when it rains. ;o)

6 ) Big Fish – because it makes me cry and there something so beautiful about it. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – not just because it’s hilarious, but because it brings back memories of sitting around my RA’s room in college watching it with all my friends. And finally, Armageddon – because it is heroic and funny and it inspired my first novel.

7 ) Allrecipes.com – the best place to find a random recipe when I really need it.

8 ) OMG, that would have to be FEED by Mira Grant. I was so totally floored that I reviewed it before I even finished it and then spent a week wondering if my own writing would ever turn out that good.

    9) I stop here every morning, but in all fairness, I did see the link for this at Silver James’s blog before I got here today.

  16. 16

    1 ) Gone Away Lake
2 ) Any home is probably nicer than my apt. I’d say the home in Valerie’s Family (for those of you who remember that long ago) because it was in the Chicago area and I wouldn’t have to move.

4 ) “Sure” cause someone is agreeing with me.

    5 ) Invisibility
6 ) Fright Night, the LOTR triology (or Return of the King if I have to pick one) and The Gumball Rally

    7 ) America’s Test Kitchen

8 ) The Hap and Leonard series by Joe Lansdale (Fun read2, the word “great” makes me always think it has to impart knowledge of some sort.)

9 ) No one, just stopped by.

    1. Christina’s Ghost by Betty Ren Wright – it was this great, creepy ghost story. I read it over and over and it gave me chills every time

    2. Does it have to be a home? Because I would totally live in the Great Library from Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next world. As far as actual homes go, I’d happily take Tom Hanks’ NYC loft from Big.

    7. My favorite cookbook would have to be John Folse’s massive Encyclopedia of Cajun and Creole Cuisine. I love it! I can cook anything from home using this. My favorite site right now is Pioneer Woman Cooks. I just love her!

    8. Hm, a great book that I’ve read in the last year that not enough people have heard about…Darling Jim by Christian Moerk was pretty fantastic. I also really loved Mira Grant’s Feed and Michael Koryta’s So Cold the River (which might have gotten more buzz than I recall).

  19. 19

    1) The entire Little House on the Prairie series. I’ve always liked the books more than the TV series.

    2) The B & B on Warehouse 13, so I could meet the characters and try to get in on some of the adventures!

    3) Stupid. This is on the same level as a swearing in my house.

    4) Glitter. Who doesn’t love glitter?

    5) Body morphing. What would it feel like to look like Angelina Jolie for a few hours?

    6) Frida, Men in Black, Shrek.

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book?
When I was a child one of the first chapter books I read was The Boxcar Children. I read the whole series and for some reason could relate to the orphans (and I wasn’t even an orphan at that time).
2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be?
I liked Tony Nelson’s house (I Dream of Jeannie)…I just thought the layout of it had a very at home kind of look to it. Of course, I’d make it more modern day if I lived in it now. ..the 70’s were ugly colors. haha
3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?)
I have a lot of them but since childhood I’ve always disliked the word :Stupid . Mainly because my mother considered it an ugly word and we weren’t allowed to say it…if we did…we were punished. I tell my kids not to say it either because it’s just not nice.
4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)
It’s not my favorite word, but I can’t help saying it: Awesome
5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)
Aside from yours?  I recently read Robert Gregory Browne’s newest Down Among the Dead Men and was BLOWN. A. WAY! That was an awesome book! I even gave it to my 16yr old who was looking for something to read and she loved it!
9 ) bonus: Who referred you here for the contest? [You must name them here in the same comment as your answers for them to be eligible!]
Uh….you did a few years ago when you first started blogging. I’ve been coming back ever since. 

1 ) Now THIS one’s the toughie. I loved quite a few children’s books growing up, so I will have to name 2 off the top of my head: Ferdinand the Bull (thought it was highly appropriate that it came up in the movie The Blind Side), and the Garfield’s Pet Force series (what can I say? I’m a sucker for a good superhero comic!).

2 ) This one’s EASY. Richard Castle’s swanky apartment on the ABC series Castle.

3 ) Least favorite word is “tentatively”, even though I use it quite a bit. It usually means (to me anyway) that a certain plan isn’t set in stone.

4 ) Favourite word is “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” because I can actually SPELL it! ;)

5 ) If I had any super power, I’d want the “Spidey Sense” to sense trouble before my subconscious ever saw it coming!

    6) The Three Caballeros, Saludos Amigos, and Star Wars Episode IV (I refuse to call it “A New Hope”).

    7) Fave cookbook: The series of books starting with Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes A Day by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe François.

    Fave cooking website: http://www.artisanbreadin5.com/

Fave restaurant(s): McCormick and Schmick (don’t go there often enough), Legal Sea Foods, and P.F. Changs.

    8) Safe At Home: Confessions of A Baseball Fanatic by Alyssa Milano. Fantastic book, and I wish more people heard of it.

    BJ

Oh, I am loving all of these answers! Reading every single one. ;)

    Here are my answers:

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book?

Both my sons loved the Shel Silverstein books. Another favorite was The Stinky Cheese Man.

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be?

Oh, I think I might be able to suffer nobly if I had to live in the house that Ryan Reynolds’ family lives in, in the movie THE PROPOSAL. That colossal thing on those cliffs overlooking all that water? Yeah, that one. It would be rough, wandering from room to room like that.

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?)

Stupid, for the same reasons Terri said above. Hate that word. There is almost never a good reason to use it.

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)

Believe. As in, I believe in you. There is something so human about the need for people to believe in us, and it’s something we can give so easily to those around us. Tell them about our faith in them.

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Invisibility. Because just imagine the things I could eavesdrop on! As a writer, that would be a gold mine, right there. But the places I could go? :::::evil laugh::::: Oh, dear.

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies.
The BOURNE trilogy (can’t really pick one), THE MATRIX, and INSIDE MAN.

    I second thepioneerwoman.com and also, allrecipes.com

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)
There are so many. This was an unfair question. I’m surprised someone hasn’t smacked me for this. ;) I think Lori’s NO MERCY is up there on the top. Ack. I just listed about ten, but I’m deleting back to one. It is killing me. ;)

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be? Pemberley

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?) Maybe. I like definitive answers. I always want to know where I stand.

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be? Ooh. Well, the x-ray vision is out – too many scary things hidden away. I’m not good at being ignored, so being invisible is out. I don’t think I want to know everything or hear everything, that could be awkward. I guess I’ll go with always having the right shoes to wear with any outfit.

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies. Gone With the Wind, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Philadelphia Story.

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant? I still think The Better Homes and Garden cookbook is the best. Other may offer some more adventurous dishes, but BH&G is the benchmark IMHO.

2 ) Tom Hanks’ NYC apartment in BIG

3 ) Whatever. After five kids, I cringe every time I hear the word.

    4 ) Freedom.

5 ) Flying. Or maybe the golden lasso. Or maybe invisibility. Or . . . it’s too hard to choose!

6 ) THE THIN MAN, STAR WARS, INCEPTION (because I just saw it and it was amazing!!!) (I have many, many more faves, however . . . these were the three that came to mind first.)

7 ) Challenged: local restaurant fave was California Fats, which they closed a couple years ago. I have several I like, but none that came close to Fats. :(

8 ) Unfortunately, I haven’t read much other than ARCs and bestsellers . . . but one underappreciated author who I’ve read ALL his fiction (6 books) and he doesn’t write anymore: Keith Ablow. Love his stuff.

    9 ) I’m ineligible!

Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland.

  36. 36

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book?
This is an out of print book. It was “Loblolly Farm” by Margaret Chastain. I loved it because it was the first book that brought home to me the idea that as much as people are the same, they are different, be it traditions, culture or location. It painted a mental picture of simpler times in the deep country in the South of a farmhouse with a porch all the way around and the family that lived there from the perspective of a girl that lived in the city visiting grandparents.
2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be?
The farmhouse in the book I mentioned in question 1, located ideally within a mile or two of a small town. Ideally also, it would be paid for and in extremely low tax zone!
3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?)
Sorry-Because it can’t undo whatever wrong that prompted someone to utter it.
4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)
I suppose it shouldn’t be my daughter’s name, right? Barring that, I have to say “HARMONICA” because it evokes memories as well as the images related to the music that features harmonicas and the idea of harmony, which there is just too little of in our world.
5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?
The power to make people smile, especially my baby girl. That is why I love humor, comedy, stand-up comics, etc. We need more comic greats like Jerry Lewis, Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg…the list goes on, too many to mention and I wouldn’t want to miss an important one.
6 ) Name three of your favorite movies.
Singing In The Rain-I can’t resist a good musical and the dancing. Must admit the reason this is my #1 is Donald O’Connor and the “Make ‘em Laugh” number – I told you, I am a comedy junkie!
Romancing the Stone-There is just something about romantic comedy and Michael Douglas (or his daddy) that make a movie. I love the tagline at the end with the publisher – “Hopeful romantic, I’m a hopeful romantic” and the sailing off into the sunset, in downtown NYC yet!
Independence Day (ID4)-Besides being an awe-inspiring movie, Jeff Goldblum, who knew Nerd could be this sexy?
7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant?
My favorite cookbook is one that belonged to my Great Grandma that Julia is named for – The Modern Priscilla Cookbook circa 1894. I also like Paula Deen’s recipe collections. My favorite recipe site is recipezaar.com, except for microwave desserts, then it’s abc123 or something like that for microwave cooking. Oh and my favorite restaurant depends on type of cuisine, but I am a red blooded carnivore and nothing beats a good steak and Texas Roadhouse for ambiance in that genre.
8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)
My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster is what I am reading now. I have awakened the beast sleeping next to me (my hubby) laughing. Also, all Janet Evanovich works. I am a humor junkie. I reread her books periodically, but when it comes to humor, Toni, you and BF rule. Bobbie Faye fans of the world unite!!!
9 ) bonus: Who referred you here for the contest? [You must name them here in the same comment as your answers for them to be eligible!]
I guess you shouldn’t be surprised, but it’s Toni McGee Causey, this zany author that is my twitter buddy! Although I did refer my daughter who is working on her entry now. I confess I am curious to see her answers!

  37. 37

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book?
Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton is my favorite children’s book. When I was little I took my very own brand new copy to a get together at my Grandma’s house. It was really rare for me to get a brand new copy and not a used copy of a book and I was so proud of it I paraded it around like a spoiled brat and wouldn’t share it with any of my cousins. When my cousin tried to rip it from my hands, I pulled back and we tore the cover and I began to sob. I still have that copy with it’s torn cover and pages yellowed with age.

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be?
Well… Friends should totally count as a family right? I mean, six people who lived in the same vicinity for ten years – they practically deserve an award (oh wait, that’s what emmys are for). Anyways, I’d of loved to be a part of that group sitting on the worn orange sofa sipping coffee listening to Phoebe’s wacky songs, Ross and Rachel’s crazy love affair, Monica’s manic cleaning frenzies, and Chandler’s sarcasm while getting hit on by Joey.

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?)
DELL Why? Because my computer that keeps 1) randomly shutting down 2) getting infected with malware 3) getting trojan horses and 4) is always needing repairs when I can’t get an English speaking person on customer service is from Dell and I’d personally like to throw it out the window of a 20 story building.

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?)
Basketball because basketball means a day where my dad and I are getting a long and are usually harassing my mother – the Purdon’t fan. :)

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Invincibility – because after the life I’ve lead I’d like to be resilient to some crap for a change.

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies.
    1) Twister – I have been able to quote every line since I was seven.
    2) My Best Friend’s Wedding – Julia Carter, Julia Roberts. Julia Anne Elizabeth, Julianne… you can see where I’m going with this can’t you?
    3) The X-Files: I Want To Believe – Merely because I’ve been waiting for that kiss at the very end since I was one year old and my mom thought I was asleep on the couch beside her..

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant?
As I am severely cooking impaired – or at least that’s what I lead those who enjoy the sport to believe – I prefer to eat at Power’s Hamburgers. Power’s is a tiny little joint in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana and it just can’t be beat. I’m the third generation of my family to eat there and I can’t wait to take my own kids there some day for the tiny little onion smothered burgers that make White Castle seem like dog food.

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.)
Follow The Stars Home By Luanne Rice is my all-time favorite book and I’ve read it more times than I can count. I never seem to grow tired of it. It’s the book I turn to when I’m happy, sad, mad, glad, or just blah.

9 ) bonus: Who referred you here for the contest? The beautiful woman from which I got my life’s breath (and yes, I am misquoting Gilmore Girls), my mama, Marcia Carter.

  38. 38

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book? The Little Engine that Could.

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be? The Gilmore Girls’ house – not because it was spectacular or gorgeous – but because there was so much love and laughter in it.

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?) Can’t. It is negative.

    4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?) Buffy. As in the Vampire Slayer. This word evokes for me the TV show and all that it means to me: friendship and love, valuing of intelligence and humor, multiple examples of different kinds of strength that has no gender;
    and the character and all that she means: a woman who is strong, funny, courageous, a good friend, and imperfect;
and Joss Whedon: the writer, creator, and director of Buffy. His writing and vision inspire me to write.

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be? To eradicate violence and moronic behavior.

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies. While You Were Sleeping. Good Will Hunting. Pirates of the Caribbean.

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant? I love Nigella Lawson (http://www.nigella.com/recipe/nigella_recipes.aspx), more for her attitude towards food than for her recipes (which are good).

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.) Beyond the Night by Joss Ware (interesting world building). Doppelgangster by Laura Resnick (hilarious). Truly, Madly by Heather Webber (interesting premise and good romantic tension).

9 ) bonus: Who referred you here for the contest? you did, from Facebook.

1 – Favorite children’s book was Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I re-read it from time to time and I still love Anne with an E, and I still cry when Matthew dies and I still feel a thrill for her when she gets the dresses with the puffed sleeves. And Gilbert was a lovely young man.

2 – I would live in the apartment with Penny in The Big Bang Theory because, even though she is a slob, I don’t think Sheldon and Leonard have a spare bedroom for me. If Penny won’t have me, then I’ll live on the Green Gables farm.

3 – My least favorite word is mucus. Why? Because I once proofed a paper by my friend and neighbor, a pediatrics nurse, about how mucus is formed by the body and what it is composed of and that is information I have never been able to Clorox out of my brain. Just writing the word makes me gag.

4 – My favorite word is excellent. Why? Because it’s an excellent word.

5 – If I had a super power, it would be invisibilty. Especially useful on days I feel fat. Plus, as Tony said, the eavesdropping thing.

6 – Three favorite movies. Tough one. I will narrow it to Enchanted April, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

7 – I am newly addicted to Cajun Recipe Exhange on Facebook.

8 – I really enjoyed Drood by Dan Simmons.

9 – You did, from FB.

(Note: I loved reading everyone else’s answers!)

What a great set of questions! You don’t have to enter me in the contest, if it feels weird, I just want to answer these. (Okay, okay, yes, I’m procrastinating writing.)

Fave book as a child. Um, wow. So many. Gonna go with The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Or Once on a Time, by A.A. Milne. Obscure, probably out of print, hysterically funny and touching and wonderful.

A film/TV home I’d move into: hmm. The Braverman clan’s parents’ gorgeous sprawling Craftsman house in Berkeley on Parenthood. Might make it hard for Dan to commute to Brooklyn, though.

Least favorite word: “Whatever.” Why yes, I have a nearly-teen in the house, why do you ask?

Favorite word: Two, for two different reasons. “Sesquipedalian,” because it defines itself. (“A tendency to use long words when short ones will do.”) And “Imagination.” Because we need it.

Super power: either teleportation or instant blink-and-the-house-is-organized. I guess that could fall under telekenisis, huh?

Three favorite movies: Wall-E. Gallipoli. (I wonder if my enjoyment of its haunting beauty would be compromised now by Mel Gibson’s shenanigans; hope not.) Four Weddings and a Funeral. (I want that circle of friends!)

Favorite cookbook: Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything. Followed closely by The Complete Cooking Light Cookbook.

I’m gonna name two books here: Alaya Johnson’s Moonshine, about a vampire suffragette in ‘20’s New York (absolutely delightful main character), and Justine Larbalestier’s Liar, which got some attention for the cover kerfuffle, but I don’t know how many people followed through and read it. Brilliant novel, both in construction and emotion.

I saw your tweet, does that count as a referral? ;)

  42. 42

1 ) What was your favorite children’s book? Black Beauty

2 ) If you could live in any home on a television series or a movie or a book, which would it be? The ranch house in Return to Lonesome Dove

3 ) What is your least favorite word? (Why?) F**k I think it’s a crude word that has become far too socially acceptable.

4 ) What is your favorite word? (Why?) Thank you. Two words I guess. I think people don’t acknowledge kindness enough.

5 ) If you could have a super power, what would it be? To create shields to protect people.

6 ) Name three of your favorite movies. Lonesome Dove, Fellowship of the Ring, Return of the King.

7 ) What is your favorite cookbook / cooking site — or — for the cooking challenged — your favorite restaurant?

Calf Fries to Caviar or the original Blue Denim cookbook it was based on.

8 ) What is a great book you’ve read in the last year that you don’t think enough people have heard about? (Doesn’t matter when it was published.) Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.

  43. 43

1 ) The Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I went as her on two different Halloweens.
