I met Jeanne Adams at a Kiss of Death romantic suspense writers retreat, but the fact is I feel like I’ve known her all my RWA life. At that retreat, we connected immediately and it wasn’t long before we traipsed off to an ABC Liquor for, um, some Diet Coke, yeah, that’s what we wanted. Shortly after, there were tarot card readings and a lots of laughs.  In the past few years, Jeanne’s blown into the romantic suspense world with two highly acclaimed novels from Kensington and another — that I just read and loved! — due out this September.
Jeanne’s here today to Blow Stuff Up ~ so let’s give her a real MSW welcome and some explosive comments!
Hello Murder She Writes writers and readers! Thank you, Roxanne, for letting me be a guest with you today! I enjoy your blog so much, it was a delight to be able to post here. I’m sure you’ll see some of my usual blog crew, The Romance Bandits, popping in to say hello too. (Be afraid…be very afraid as they tend to invade….) Grins. When Roxanne and I were talking topics, I decided I’d focus on your blog’s title, Murder She Writes. It seemed a good fit for me since I like to bump characters off with great regularity in my own books. If there’s a high body count wrapped around a good story, I’m your girl; I like to write them, I like to read them. I’ll skip movies where there’s just blood — Saw, anyone? — but if there’s a story, and a romance? I’m there. I also like books and movies where things blow up.
In fact, that’s my usual criteria for a date night movie — does something blow up? Is there a decent chase scene — physical or psychological? If not, I’m not that enthusiastic. My husband loves them too, thank goodness, or date night could be a real drag. Since date night’s expensive (babysitters are extortionists in teenage clothing!) we don’t do it that often, but it’s great to be compatible on this issue. I’m not that keen on seeing movies that make me weep copiously and leave me feeling like I just watched two solid hours of the worst of the evening news. Urg. Thankfully, my husband hates movies like A Night In Rodanthe (date night with another couple…sigh) as much as I did and gleefully chose Sherlock Holmes for the latest date night. I want movies like Con Air, The Rock, The Bourne movies, Fast and Furious; I want Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Iron Man, Avatar, and Wolverine. If it’s a “chick-flick” it can’t be a tear-jerker-and-no-happy-ending deal. The Holiday, Sabrina, Batman Returns…wait, that’s another one where things blow up. Grins. Still, you get my drift.
When it comes to books, I love the same thing. All the wonderful Murder She Writes authors are on my keeper shelf. While I know SJ, *waving madly* and Roxanne personally, you all keep me in stories of boom, thrill and wow! So, thank you! I like to do that in my own books as well, and I can only hope I’ll succeed as well as you Murder She Write-ers. My fellow blog-mates call me one of the “Boom-Girls” because I’m notorious for my tendency to kill-em-off or blow-it-up. Plot problem? All will be solved by a convenient bomb. Inconvenient character? A handy murder will fix that right up. My first book, Dark and Dangerous, starts with the heroine blowing up half her house (and a number of bad guys) when her ex-husband comes after her. The second, Dark and Deadly, starts with a pipe bomb. My third book which comes out in September, Deadly Little Secrets, starts with five murders. Grins.
As I said, when in doubt…kill someone off or blow something up… Ha! This topic of murder and blowing things up is near and dear to my heart and writing as you can tell. I even teach a class on body disposal, which gives you an idea of how much I’m interested in the topic. My darling husband loves to tell people that going on date night rocks, because we like the same kind of movies and I never drag him to a “weeper,” but he sometimes wonders if he should sleep with one eye open given how often I employ that body disposal thing in my books. Or how sharp I keep my kitchen knives. Bwah-ha-ha!
Obviously, if you’re a fan of this blog, you’re into this whole concept of Boom and Blast. What’s been your favorite BOOM movie this last year? Do you enjoy movies that start with a bang and never let up, or ones, like Bourne and Bond, that have more of a psychological element? Who’s your favorite blow-em-up, kill-em-off, psychological thriller authors? Do you go for Ludlum and Crichton as well as your favorite Romantic Suspense Authors? Or do you insist on some happily-ever-after with your boom? I can’t wait to read these lists…and thanks again for letting me come play!

Carry on!
Hi Jeanne! My husband and I rarely see movies together, but the Bourne ones always work for us. Although he’s more interested in the explosions and I’m watching the relationships. Can’t wait for Matt Damon’s upcoming badass movie Green Zone. Looking forward to Deadly Little Secrets in September!
Hi Roxanne! Thanks for having me!
Hi Laura! I loved the Bourne movies too, for both the relationships and the BOOM! Grins. Have you read the books? I too am looking forward to Green Zone…
Hey Jeanne! Seeing you here is a great way to start the day.
Movies, hmmm? Avatar, of course. Even though it’s basically Dances with Wolves, but in the future, I loved it. All the Star War movies, too. And I have a passion for those Bruce Willis movies where everything blows up…and he still doesn’t get the girl. LOL
Leigh, you crack me up. I love all the Die Hard/Bruce Willis movies too. Isn’t it funny that he STILL can’t get the girl? Do you think the writers do that on purpose to him, or does he insist on the rewrite? Grins. It’s kinda become his signature. Oh, and Star Wars…looove it!! Lots of things blow up and Han Solo gets the princess and the princess gets Han *eyebrow wiggle* and Luke…well, Luke gets some great black boots, you know? Hahahah!
I do like me a good tear jerker (Nights in Rodanthe) or a good romantic comedy (It’s Complicate) but a good action thriller ain’t bad either. Like you, I don’t like the ones like Saw, but I’ve been a Bond fan since I was in junior high and saw Goldfinger.
I didn’t see many movies last year, but wasn’t there death and destruction in “Angels and Demons?” Sherlock Holmes is on my to-be-seen list. Robt Downey Jr was so good in Ironman.
Hi Marilyn! Bond rocks, doesn’t he? My fav is Sean Connery, of course, but Daniel Craig and Pierce aren’t tooooo far behind! Angels and Demons was very good as far as the boom and bang. Loved it, but I loved the book more. :>
A girl after my own heart! Great to see you here, Jeanne! TAKEN was one of my favorite movies during the past year!
Loved TAKEN, Deb. Liam at his deadliest. I loved the phone conversation when he was “negotiating” with the bad guy. hehe!
Oh. My. Liam. Hmmmm….there goes my concentration
Hi Debra! I didn’t get to see Taken. I’m planning to order it on Netflix once I get through my RITA judging assignment (which is great fun, I must say!). What did you like best about Taken? (Besides Liam Nesson?)
Silver and Sophie, looks like you have the same opinion of Liam that I do…YUM! Did you ever see him in the movie Shining Through? He played a German General…man he looks good in uniform. Grins.
Jeanne, he looks even better OUT of uniform…just sayin’.
Action adventure R US, or me I should say. Just saw “Lightening Theif” and loved it. Full of action. Like Patterson’s Alex Cross for the same reason. I write Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Mysteries. Guess what? They all begin with murders of some kind. Need a body count to be happy.
I’m LOL, Carol! I too seem to need a body count to be happy, whether I’m writing RS or Paranormals. :> My agent is in the process of selling my paranormals, so there’ll be more bodies spread around soon….wow, that sounds reallly, reallly, bad….
I liked the movie Taken too. It made me a nervous wreck though. I like the Die Hard movies, the Transformer movies, GI Jane, GI Joe, yeah, I like the blow them up violent movies. Not that I don’t like softer movies, I just don’t watch them all the time.
Hi Linda! I’m dying to see GI Joe. That’s in the Netflix queue as well. My son’s get theirs in there and I have to wait a while. Then again, I’m supposed to be finishing a book and doing copy edits so I guess it’s okay that I”m not watching movies….right?
Hi Jeanne! Since one of my best critiquers is my brother, who writes thrillers, his solution to plot problems frequently involves blowing things up. I resisted for the longest time, insisting I could up the tension through relationship issues and so forth, but my last two books have had true-blue explosions so I guess I’m learning…
Sophie! I’m so glad to hear your brother is bringing you over to the BOOOM-side! (As opposed to the Dark Side) Yeah, you on making things blow up. Grins. Did you find it lessened the tensions, as you feared, or did it increase them?
G’morning, Jeanne. As a former ARFF (airport rescue firefighter), I tend to lean toward plane crashes. Though it’s an oldie, US MARSHALS with Tommy Lee Jones is a fav. I agree with Deb, TAKEN was awesome. I’m a “new” Bond girl. I lovelovelove Daniel Craig’s take on the character (though Connery will forever hold a place in my heart!). I love explosions, implosions, gunfights, high-speed chases… Why yes, I am an adrenaline junky, why do you ask? LOL
Books? Anything written by any of the authors here on MSW, though Cussler, Ludlum, and Hillerman rank near the top, too.
Silver, how cool! You were ARFF, that is totally amazing. I’d love to hear more about that. Plane crashes are good fodder for books, aren’t they? Have to say though, from working in the funeral biz, that they are NOT pretty when it comes to picking up the pieces for the sake of the family. Urg. However, in fiction? Brilliant. Cussler – oh, yeah! And Hillerman too. I once read a rejection letter that Tony Hillerman got which said, “If you take out all of the Indian stuff, I think you would have a very marketable manuscript…” Snork. Yeah, right.
Hi Jeanne, welcome to MSW!!!
I have been dying to see TAKEN (yes, I know, I’m so late!) But I also love romantic comedies and so does my husband. I don’t know how I got so lucky there.
Blowing stuff up is an excellent solution to a plot problem
Hi Jennifer! Thanks for the welcome! Obviously, we’re both late to see Taken – grins. You are lucky that your hubby like rom-coms. Mine will “tolerate” them, but doesn’t really like them unless they involve Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. For some reason, some of the classic ones, he really likes, but not 27 Dresses. Ha!
See everyon? Jennifer agrees with me. Explosions are EXCELLENT solutions to plot problems. Thank you, Jennifer! Grins.
Jeanne, a fun post! Yay for blowing stuff up! I do so love the copious boom in your books.
I enjoy romantic comedy, and the dh and I are okay with movies like Chocolat on occasion, but my first choice is always a boom movie if one is available. Star Trek had great boom, for example. So did Iron Man. The Bourne movies were explosive without actual detonations.
I’m not coming up with books right now, just drawing a blank. I loved Tony Hillerman and Dick Francis and Dorothy L. Sayers, but they didn’t always have boom involved. Cathy Pickens is always good for a dead body or two or three. As is Kate Carlisle, of course.
Hi Nancy! Thanks for popping by! Nancy is one of my fellow Boom Girls on the Romance Bandits. If you love Bond, Bourne and Laura Croft, you’ll love Nancy’s stuff. Now if an editor would just pick it up….
Iron Man and Star Trek, as you and I have discussed Nancy, were among my fav blow-it-up movies last year. I love that Star Trek even started with a BOOM!
Hey, Murder Girls! Hey, Miss Jeanne aka Boom Girl! Hmm, those two greetings make me think I’m dealing with a very explosive combination. I’ll have to make sure I cut the blue wire and not the red!
Jeanne, firstly, congratulations on your brilliant books. I remember when I picked up Dark and Dangerous and you blew that house up – correction, when your heroine blew that house up! – that I was dealing with someone special. Oh, and scary, LOL!
I tend to prefer a battle of wits story and if there’s boom involved, well, that’s OK. And must say I’m a perennial fan of the good old HEA.
Hi Anna! Thanks for stopping in to the Murder Page. Grins. Doesn’t that sound wicked? Thanks for your lovely words about Dark and Dangerous. I did so love blowing that house up. :> Battles of wits are a lovely read too. Have you ever seen The Thomas Crowne Affaire? Both old and new, they are brilliant battles of wits and skills, with nary a BOOM in sight. Grins.
Jeanne, I’ve seen both. Must say I have a slight preference for the older one even with the ending – it’s just so stylish and while I love Pierce, Steve McQueen was just da bomb in that. Actually that’s a perfect example of what I mean about a battle of wits – really had me on the edge of my seat. Do you remember the chess game? Really sexy scene!
Totally! And Steve McQ has that animal magnatism thing down pat in that movie. Wowie-zowie!
Jeanne, I didn’t realize you liked to blow things up…. *g* Kidding. It’s totally your signature style, girl!
I’m not really a blow ‘em up fan (no smart comments, though). I tend to see less violent movies and swear all those cheesy rom com girlie movies were made just for me. I did see The Lightning Thief recently (twice, my kid is addicted) and thought it was great, though. All the blowing up was via magic, though – no bombs
Hi Tawny! *waving madly* Thanks for stopping in. I’m dying to see The Lightning Thief. I’m teaching a class on writing for a group of 9-12 year olds and they are allllllll about it. I want to read the books, but I hear they’re totally addicting and I have edits to finish…
I guess I shouldn’t make it sound like I don’t like ANY romcoms or chick flicks, I do. the aforementioned 27 Dresses, The Holiday, Music and Lyrics, 50 First Dates, How to Lose a GUy in 10 days (a personal fav), I just like Sahara, and movies of that ilk more. Grins.
Jeanne, we read all the books first and yeah, they totally rock. I had to get them on audio for my daughter, she was so addicted LOL
My list of action flicks is growing with each comment I read. I’ll be honest, I need a romance – at least as a subplot – to hold my interest in a movie. Even a bromance if it’s all guys. I’ve got a 16 year old son and if it explodes, he’s happy. Count me in with the lovers of movies like Thomas Crowne Affair (LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!) and Fool’s Gold.
And thank you so much for sharing your day with us, Jeanne!
Ohhh, Fools Gold, great movie! :> Did you like An Affaire to Remember, Roxanne? I like a romance in an action flick too. For instance, I liked the Rush Hour movies, but would have liked a romance in them. Same with Bad Boys and Men in Black. There was “romantic interest”, but not really a romance per se. :>
And as an aside, omg is your son 16 now??? How did that happen???
LOL How DID he get to be 16 when I certainly haven’t aged a day since he was born? I told you I felt like we’d known each other forever! Truth is, he almost 17 and just hit six feet recently. Once they look down on you, it’s all over.
Oh, man, that’s scary. My oldest is predicted to be 6.5. Since he’s a 5′ now and not in double digits in age yet, I’m thinking he’ll get there.
Yes, we HAVE known each other forever…wow…and I’ve not aged either by the way. Snork. My hairdresser makes sure of that.
Hey, Jeanne! Well, you know I love me some action and boom in my movies. The ones I particularly loved this past year were Star Trek (what an awesome reboot of a series that’s been around a long time) and Avatar (loved, loved, loved it). I’m really looking forward to the second Iron Man, out in May. Have you seen the trailer online? Looks awesome.
And hubby and I were just talking about Matt Damon last night when we saw a commercial for Green Zone. We were like, “Who would have thought back when he did Good Will Hunting that he would turn out to be one badass action hero?” It’s nice to have action heroes who can actually act.
Hey Trish! You are so right about Matt Damon. From the Good Will Hunting days to the Talented Mr. Ripley *shiver* to Bourne to Green Zone. What a range!
I am psyched for Iron Man 2. Bummed that Terrence Howard isn’t in it though.
Hey Jeanne and all you suspense ladies! Love the post, and yes, I know you love to blow things up. We have a time keeping you and t he “boom” sisters on good behavoir over at the Bandit Lair!
Like you, I prefer some meat, explosion and intrigue in my movies and books. If it’s a chick flick, I’d at least better get my HEA. But my recent movie forays have been to see, “Law Abiding Citizen” Gerrard Butler AND lots of boom and “Sherlock Holmes”, who knew Sherlock could be so buff?
Can’t wait for the next Jeanne Adams book to hit the shelves!
Hi Suz! Wasn’t Sherlock a good/baddie cool character? I’m liking ROb’t Downey Jr. these days. :> How was Law Abiding Citizen?
Thanks for your kind words about the next book. I’m looking forward to it too. Ha! How’s your latest coming? (Suz writes American set western romances. DI-vine!)
Hi, Jeanne and Rocki, swinging over from the Bandit’s Lair a little late, but I’ve had my baby monster today
You know, Jeanne, that I’m one of the Bandita Boom Booms too. I don’t like them to run endlessly, however. I like a touch of the unexpected and a tad of class with mine. I’m a real Bond girl (I wish!).
Love both your books, gals! Keep them coming.
Thanks for having me over today, Murder Girls! Grins. (I like that moniker Anna Campbell tossed out.) It was an honor to be here. Thank you too for the warm welcome! Happy Mayhem!
Hey girlie girls,
I want to see Sherlock Holmes! I loved G.I. Joe , awesome! I just bought Law Abiding Citizen and I can’t wait to watch it. I buy as many movies as I do books. I am an addict! I need a good 12 step program…NOT!
