Aside from the family gathering at Thanksgiving, the best part of the holiday for me is the turkey sandwich later. The one you make on fresh white bread with mayo, salt, pepper, and leftover turkey! At no other time of year does this simple concoction taste as good as is does late Thanksgiving night. I just had mine. At 4 a.m. the morning after. I would have had it earlier, but, um, I came home and slept for 4 hours first.
My son and son-in-law took off an hour ago to do their traditional Black Friday shopping. They’ve been looking up sales on line and in the newspaper all week. They have flat screens and laptops on the mind. And my son, for some odd reason wants fur lined black leather gloves. Go figure.
Me? I’m going to be sleeping during the madness. I can feel the affects of the trytophan as I type. So please forgive me for slacking a wee bit on the blog today. I mean c’mon, y’all will be out shopping all day and hardly give me a thought, but if you do, I want to know two things:
What is your favorite part of Thanksgiving, and if you ventured out on Black Friday, please share and tell us what you bought! I can live vicariously through you! And when the boys return, I’ll give you the low down on their purchases. They usually do pretty good.
Happy day after!

It takes a braver person than I to attempt shopping today. Ugh. To me, no sale is worth that kind of headache.
My favorite part of Thanksgiving would have to be the time I spent relaxing with my husband and my daughter. We just chilled out all day – except for the cooking Hubby did and the cleaning up Daughter did. Okay, so I chilled all day and they chilled most of the day.
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and I wish everyone a restful weekend (or productive, if you’re trying to reach a goal by 12/1, like me). =o)
by B.E. Sanderson November 27th, 2009 at 7:42 amHappy Day after, Beth! I too am a wimp when it comes to black friday shopping.
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:41 pmWhat is your 12/1 goal?
Just was trying to write 50K on my WIP this month, Karin. As of last night, I’m just over 10K short, so if I want to hit it, I need to put my head down and write over the next three days.
by B.E. Sanderson November 28th, 2009 at 5:48 amMy favorite part is the sandwiches in the evening with most of the family still there. I also love coming home and getting comfy on the couch.
There is no way I would go shopping today unless it was an emergency or I could get a new laptop for under a hundred bucks.
by HollyD November 27th, 2009 at 8:26 amHolly, my sandwich was soooo good! As far as the laptop for a hundred bucks, now that would be a deal! My eldest son picked one up this morning for 300 and change. He’s very happy.
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:45 pmBlack Friday? I cower at home. Those people scare the bejeezus outta me!
We skip all the rigamarol and go straight for the good stuff on Thanksgiving. I roast a turkey breast and make pumpkin pie. Then we each make our own turkey sammich, watch football, and finish up with slightly warm pumpkin pie slathered with Rediwhip. This year, to add to the mayhem, Lawyer Guy and The Only taught the Newf fuzzypup to do shots of Rediwhip from the can. I have video. If I can only figure out how to upload it. LOL
Like BE, I’m working this weekend, with the vague idea I can catch up and reach my goal by midnight Nov. 30. If I don’t get off the net, there’s no chance so…*bye*
by Silver James November 27th, 2009 at 9:02 amPenny, the boys told me that at Walmart this morning ther were twenty, yes, twenty, cops cars lined up from the front door all of the way to the back of the store and that the line to get in was into the next shopping center parking lot. apparently last year as shoppers were coming out with their booty thugs lurked between the cars in the parking lot and were mugging them for their cache. Same at Best Buy. What kind of world do we live in? I’m going to jump back on my wip shortly too! Happy writing!
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:49 pmShoot, I hate shopping on the best of days with zero crowds, so there is no way I would attempt to shop on BF!
by Margaret A. Golla November 27th, 2009 at 9:10 amThe best thing about Thanksgiving? The day after with a bunch of lefties, but no pressure!
Margaret I’m not a big crowd person either, but after the kids came home and talked about all of the deals out there, it kind of made me want to venture forth… NOT!
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pmNo venturing outside for me. To be totally honest, since we didn’t have Thanksgiving dinner at home, I went to the store this morning (markets aren’t bad) and bought a turkey which I will cook this afternoon. In all fairness to her inlaws, there were here on vacation in a timeshare condo with very limited cooking resources, so it wasn’t a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. (Um … Carvel Ice Cream cake for dessert?)
DD is visiting us for a few days after her inlaws leave, and we’ll have HER favorites here, including the pumpkin apple pie and the canned cranberry jelly/sauce she wanted.
So, I’m cooking a bit late, but no pressure, no fuss. Doesn’t have to look pretty. And having a fridge full of turkey for noshing will be a good thing.
by Terry Odell November 27th, 2009 at 9:30 amMe either, Terry. I love Carvel ice cream anything!
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:53 pmLove the turkey sandwiches. We like ours on rye with dressing, cranberry and a pickle. Gotta have the pickle!
No store shopping for me. The internet has Black Friday sales too. I just ordered a digial photo frame for my brother. Great deal!
by Carol Luce November 27th, 2009 at 10:24 amHey, Carol, your version of a turkey sandwich sounds delish! My hubby likes them that way too, sans the rye. I think I could eat anything on rye, the pickle just makes it that much more special. Internet Black Friday shopping? I’m there!
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:57 pmSame here, Karin — we slept in and had leftovers for lunch. My plan is to have the best turkey sandwich ever for dinner tonight. I love the day after holidays, if you have off and can lounge.
My youngest son, though, woke up at 3 and was in line at a major outlet by 4, where he said over a 1000 people were ahead of him. He got the item he wanted, though, and saved a lot of money and was home, playing with it by 4:30.
I am very happy to have slept through all of that.
by Toni McGee Causey November 27th, 2009 at 10:52 amToni, I am so slacking today. I did get dressed first thing, i knew if i didn’t, i still be in my jammies at dinner time.
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 12:58 pmOkay, so here is the booty list: Two Tom Tom’s (the higher end model), two pair of Vans, one iPod clock radio docking station, one fleece hoody, one gorgeous white gold and diamond ring (for my daughter), two watches, and a pair shorts. All for less than $650 bucks. My son-in-law saved 500 on the ring alone. Not bad for two guys with $ burning a hole in their pocket.
by Karin Tabke November 27th, 2009 at 1:06 pmI spent Black Friday waiting for the kids to return from shopping, finished up getting the GH entry ready, and mailing it off to Houston. Fingers crossed.
by Jill James November 27th, 2009 at 3:44 pmgood luck with the GH, Jill!!
by Karin Tabke November 28th, 2009 at 12:53 amLOL My mom lives for that yearly turkey sandwich w/mayo on white bread (two indulgences not allowed any other time of year). Me? I’m happiest the day after New Year’s – when all the madness is well and truly over until next year.
by catie james November 27th, 2009 at 5:08 pmCatie I am so there with you on January 1st!
by Karin Tabke November 28th, 2009 at 12:54 amI normally love going to the mall on Black Friday (though I hate that name) but not this year. Most of my shopping will be done on-line. Already started (sort of.) I wrote today at Starbucks while Dan took the kids to storage to pull out all our Christmas decorations.
by Allison Brennan November 27th, 2009 at 7:00 pmAllison, every year I say I’m going to Christmas shop online, and every year I fail to do it. This year, I’m only buying for my kids and granddaughter, so it will cut down on the anxiety of shopping at the malls or online.
by Karin Tabke November 28th, 2009 at 12:56 amChilly had me until she wrote dill pickle. I love me dill pickles but not with my homemade cranberry relish.
Because of last minute job wars, we did not get to celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional dinner and family. So we had prime rib French dip sans at the casino and homemade pumpkin pie. I miss the turkey so much I am roasting a breast tomorrow – turkey, duh.
I am thankful (for many things) but today definately that I have a job that keeps me from even contemplating the manic madness that is Black Friday. I could imagine how claustraphobic I would be.
by Cele November 27th, 2009 at 10:27 pmI don’t normally shop on Thanksgiving, but we saw something we wanted and it was too good a price to pass up. We got the last one! We only waited in line for less than 10 minutes. The woman behind us was a veteran Black Friday shopper. She entertained us with stories, including the Friday years ago when she got the last Cabbage Patch doll and another woman scratched her hand, trying to get it.
Favorite part of Thanksgiving is family. Always.
by Edie November 29th, 2009 at 11:01 amEdie I remember the Cabbage Pacth Kids craze! Thank goodness neither of my girls was interested.
Now beanie babies? whole ‘nuther story. I have bags and bags of them in my garage.
