One of my favorite authors ever is Karin Slaughter, who writes dark thrillers. However, her books are full of humor -- they're either ridiculous funny or "he said THAT?" funny, as in dark humor. I like it when there are such things in dark books. I love dark humor, and stupid humor. :)

Funny's essential to me. Nonsense funny is even better. I love it. All my crime tv shows have to be funny, that's why I favor Bones over Law&Oder:SVU, for example, because the atmosphere is funny. The *only* tv show I watch that isn't funny is Criminal Minds. Which, personally, I think some humor, even with the darker atmosphere, would make the show even better :)

What a great post! Very informative and funny :)

I still laugh out loud at Evanovich's Stephanie Plum stories. In particular, any scene with Grandma Mazur has me howling. Maybe because she's like the anti-grandma.

I love how Toni writes humor and thinks about it, because I am SO not funny. I can talk funny (sometimes) and I can sometimes have a funny line (usually sarcasm--I was surprised at how sarcastic my heroine in my deadly sins series is) but I know I can't "do" funny. And that's fine. It's not me or my natural voice. However, I want to find the comic relief moments. Right now it's usually sex instead of comic relief, LOL.

Like Lorena, one of my favorite romantic comedies is French Kiss. I've dissected that movie to show the hero's journey in romance (after someone told me that the hero's journey didn't apply to romance--um, right. Sure. The hero and heroine don't have journeys . . . not!)

My other favorite movie, which is not as much a romantic comedy but has many humorous moments is WORKING GIRL. I can watch it anywhere, anytime.

I love the humor (often dark) that certain actors bring to their roles, like Bruce Willis as John McClain, or Ian McShane (?) in DEADWOOD. or Harrison Ford as Han Solo. I love the comic relief that R2-D2 and C3PO bring to Star Wars.

I liked WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, at least initially, but there was something wrong with the third act. I don't know what or why. I did like the ending, though! Ditto for CROCODILE DUNDEE--great situational humor but there was something off. I generally like fish out of water stories, and if I were to write anything at all humorous (which I won't) it would probably be in that vein.

Nah, I don't watch Rom-Com's. I'm more of a blow things up with a side of romance kinda gal. :-)
Though I have to admit, I did cringe during Transformers #2 during the 'sexual' scenes--probably because my kid was sitting next to me and I didn't want to tackle THAT can of worms!

Hmm...romantic comedy? Sure...(hits head on desk trying to remember particular scenes)...French Kiss, where Meg Ryan is trying to communicate with Kevin Kline...while hating everything she thinks he stands for. While You Were Sleeping; Runaway Bride, IQ ... now I sound like I'm stuck in the 90's!

Belated THANK YOU to Rocki for giving me the idea for this blog yesterday as I was thumping my head on my desk, wondering what to write about. ;)

Margaret & Lorena -- thanks... and how neat for the timing! Are there any funny movies you've liked? Rom coms?

RK, thank you! I think we all have an innate talent for humor, but it's a tool that has to be developed just like any other tool. I truly believe you can use it!

Hi :)
Thank you very very much for such a great blog post. I envy the writers, like you, who can deftly intertwine humor in their stories and can make me laugh out loud when I read them, no matter where I am.
I will try to incorporate your wisdom into my writing, but I am sadly humor-deficient. I think it is a natural quality, an innate gift of the writer, that allows such deft use of humor to work so well in their writing. And you have that talent, that gift.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom today,
Love and best wishes,
