Hi gang:
Normally, I would never do this . . . but today was my bi-monthly post at Romancing The Blog. I spent WAY too much time writing that post and zapped any other ideas from my brain. However, it’s relevant to readers AND writers: illegal downloads of books.
So if you’d like, visit Romancing The Blog today for my post.
And to make it up to you, I’m giving away another ARC. I just got my first two author copies of SUDDEN DEATH and realized I still have an ARC. So it’s yours . . . well, to one of you. Comment below before midnight Friday (tomorrow, PT) and I’ll randomly pick one winner.

Hi Allison. I commented over at RTB before you posted here. Does that count? I’m not going to repeat what I said either.
by Terry Odell March 5th, 2009 at 8:00 amI would love an arc of Sudden Death. Though you know I’ll go out and buy it immediately when it hits the shelves. Heading over to ‘romancing’ to read your post.
by Robin of My Two Blessings March 5th, 2009 at 8:45 amHi Allison, I haven’t made it to the other blog yet. I would love to win your new book. Thanks for the giveaway/contest. Have a great day.
by Roberta Harwell March 5th, 2009 at 8:46 amI will have to go read your blog, I’ve been trying to figure out how people steal book downloads. I know the economy is weak, respect seems to be a victim.
by Cele March 5th, 2009 at 9:13 amI would like an ARC! Put my name in the hat, please. : )
by Louisa Edwards March 5th, 2009 at 9:26 amOh, boy! More books to read. *adds them to list* I’ll stop by Romancing the Blog later when I get back. Later, gators!
by Silver James March 5th, 2009 at 9:36 amOMG, I didn’t realize that there were still sites that were doing this.
You said it perfectly “stealing is stealing”. That’s exactly what I told my kids when the free song downloads were going on. I told my kids that if they wanted a song, they could go to Wal-Mart’s or Amazon’s websites and pay for the songs.
Do these people not understand copyright infringement? I can’t afford to buy every single book I want. Oh that would be nice. Anyway that does not give me the right to steal books. I have a monthly book budget and once the money is spent, I’m done for the month. I just prioritize the books, the MSW ladies, Janet Evanovich, Robert Crais, JA Jance, and PJ Tracy.
It goes back to parents teaching their kids right from wrong. Too bad not all parents know the difference.
by HollyD March 5th, 2009 at 9:56 amGoing to check out the RTB post soon. I want to read “Sudden Death” right now.
by Jane March 5th, 2009 at 12:01 pmI know there are some people who don’t have the resources to buy all the books they want, but they can utilize the library.
by Jane March 5th, 2009 at 12:06 pmMy husband is a photographer, and has battled theft of his images before, often by other types of artists, which is really weird. They use his image to make their own and pass it off as their own work.
May I also be included in the hat for one of your books? Thank you for the chance!
by Karen in Ohio March 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pmPS If those artists had just asked, he would have said yes, and all they had to do was give him credit. That’s the crazy part about it.
by Karen in Ohio March 5th, 2009 at 12:47 pmAllison, can’t believe Sudden Death is coming out already. Can’t wait to read it.
Posting at RTB too.

Bottom line– Theft is Theft. If we can’t teach our kids that now, what’s the future hold.
Great blog =)

by Catherine March 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pmAnd odds are, if you went to the person downloading for free and said, “Okay, that’s fine. Go ahead and download the songs. But for every hour you work at your job, we’re only going to pay you for half. Or maybe only for every third hour. You absolutely have to work the 40 hours to keep your job, but you might only get 10 hours of pay some weeks, 5 for others. Maybe if you’ve been around for a long long time and we know you really well, you’ll get 30.”
Not a single person would go for that.
(haven’t had a chance to get to RTB today, so I may be repeating your point)
by toni mcgee causey March 5th, 2009 at 2:07 pmHi gang! Thanks for commenting . . . I was off line to write (desperately needed!) . . . more soon!
by Allison Brennan March 5th, 2009 at 2:23 pmI remember the first e-book “sharing” site I saw. Very amateurish. But now, a friend send me a link to a site she’d sent a C&D letter. It was a forum! Someone there was requesting Shayla Kersten’s new book that had been released the day before. Un-freaking-believable!
UBS are great for me to try new authors. But I buy new books to support authors I like, friends, etc.
by ArkansasCyndi March 5th, 2009 at 4:57 pmi don’t know what happened to the comment I made this morning, but please put me in the hat for your ARC. I would love a chance to win it. Even if I don’t win, will buy it as soon as it becomes available.
Question – why do all my comments get set aside for moderation? Just curious.
by Robin of My Two Blessings March 5th, 2009 at 6:56 pmI don’t know, but if I’m not logged in as an author here, I get held in moderation, too . . . I’ll ask our web guru.
by Allison Brennan March 7th, 2009 at 4:11 pmI love reading your books Allison.
I would love to win an ARC of “Sudden Death.” Definately enter me too.
I’m heading over to the RTB post now.
Thanks!
by Terri W. March 5th, 2009 at 7:38 pmI read your post at RTB yesterday, Allison, and it was excellent. (I didn’t comment because you said it all, and I was fuming over that one commenter.) Theft of ideas is a theft like any other. Of course, taking things that don’t belong to you seems to be less of problem for some people than others. It sad that even people who would never think of reaching into your pocket and taking a twenty have no problem with stealing your books. Feh.
by B.E. Sanderson March 6th, 2009 at 6:19 amLove reading ARC’S, count me in!
by Teresa W. March 6th, 2009 at 8:18 amA very thoughtful post on Romancing the Blog, Allison. I wish I had an answer for the problem but I don’t. With the economy in the tank as it is a lot more people are seriously reconsidering wants over needs. They may want a new book from their favorite author but may not need it. What to do? A free download you say? Why not? The hours of blood, sweat and tears the author invested in that book never comes into play. Toni McGee Causey’s post above had it right. You have to make it personal for the illegal downloaders to understand.
by Karen Kish March 6th, 2009 at 8:21 amWow, great post, Allison! Quite the debate you’ve stirred up in the comments section over there.
And I completely agree that a great deal of this is “generational”. I worry about how that bodes for their future.
by Jen March 6th, 2009 at 9:13 amI would like to win an ARC of Sudden Death. I just read about duplication of a Concordance about Modesty Blaise. The copier claims the second Concordance is his original work even though they are virtually identical. also the original Concordance is free to view and print for private use.
