These last few weeks have been contemplatively philosophical for me. I’m not sure if it’s because I have been slammed with this deadline, the release of JADED and MASTER OF SURRENDER just a week apart, promoting like a slave, or if it’s just hormonal or all of the above. But the fact of the matter is, I have been thinking. A lot. About people. Mostly about the outpouring of support and friendship this last month and not just from my family, or from friends I have known both in person and online for years, but also from new friends. New faces who are genuine, good folks. Quite frankly, I have been overwhelmed by it. And, I wanted to say, “Thank you.”
I don’t know why I am always surprised by all of the goodness out here. I believe most people are good. So why when a complete stranger does something nice for me I am surprised? Most people would say, “Because they want something from you.” Maybe but so what? All it could be as simple as wanting a connection. Is that so hard to give? Not for me. So, for whatever the reason, I want to again say, “Thank you, to my old friends who have weathered many a storm with me, to my news friends who have no idea what they are in for, and to my future friends. Thank you for your encouragement, cheers, smiles and visits, whether it’s here, my blog, the Fog City Divas or wherever I may find myself as a guest.”
Now as a token of my appreciation, I have a gift for a commenter. Not a gift card or books, but memorable gift from one friend to another, all you have to do is comment, a simple hello will do or you can tell us who your best friend is and why.
So the gift is an original Poppy Laurel Believe necklace. It’s hand made by my dear friend Poppy. I have one, and I swear it gives me good luck. We all need to keep believing no matter where we are in life or our careers. So, comment away and Sunday night I will pick a winner!
And FYI, Poppy had gone to bed long before I wrote this, so hopefully when she gets up she’ll send me a link to a picture of the necklace (and I’ll add it to the blog since I have no clue how to upload a picture here). The piece is simple and elegant and would look fabulous on any of your necks!
PS, over at Fog City Divas, Diva Bella Andre asked my ITALIAN STALLIONS antho partner Jami Alden and I a few questions. We had fun with it, swing by.

Hey, Karin!
by Margaret A. Golla June 27th, 2008 at 4:02 amJust thought I’d let you know that I’ve got your back in OK.
I’m about 1/3 of the way through MofS–LOVE IT!! But I wish I could read for longer periods of time: need new reading glasses, kiddo irritating me, chauffeuring, my own writing, kiddo irritatiing me, yard/house/critter chores, judging a contest, kiddo irritating me. . . You get the pic. (psst, only 47 more days until school!)
I’ve got a best friend I see maybe once every five or ten years, but it’s like we can pick up exactly where we left off. We met in junior high. I can’t wait for the Emerald City Writer’s Conference because she’s moved to Bellingham, WA, which is close enough to Seattle to justify both the conference and extending the trip. And even scoping out some retirement possibilities.
by Terry Odell June 27th, 2008 at 4:44 amI was thinking that it would be nice to give those necklaces to friends this holiday season (yes, I shop early, lol) but I can’t find a website for a site for Poppy Laurel. Any chance you could provide a link?
by Jen Baum June 27th, 2008 at 4:49 amWell, I for one had been hoping to be blessed with a book deal by now, but what I got instead was so much better – good friends who support me and let me support them, who are forgiving and patient, and who are models to live life by. I would still love a book deal, but you know, I waited so long to find friends like this – they inspire me to be patient on the career stuff too!
by Christa M. Miller June 27th, 2008 at 5:25 amI think it was luck that I stumbled upon your book Skin because then I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of searching for more of your wonderful books like Good Girl Gone Bad and your recent releases Jaded and Master of Surrender. But I think I should be thanking you Karin for writing you novels for everyone to enjoy. Without you we wouldn’t have these wonderful novels to enjoy and talk about with friends. *HUGS*
I’ve developed some friendships with readers and authors online and those relationship are amazing because I learn so much from them and sometime them from me.
by Phoebe Jordan June 27th, 2008 at 5:44 amKarin, you deserve good things, and the readers here know it. You always encourage those of us who are unpublished and those who are hitting a rough patch. You truly care about others and that is obvious in all of your posts. Okay not the one where you wanted to kill the men in your family, but all the others.
I’ve already warned hubby and the kids that I’m reading MOS this weekend.
Margaret, that’s just too many days. I’m taking it one day at a time. My kids are 14, 13, 9, 7, & 2. My writing has been almost non-existent for the past three weeks.
Have a good weekend everyone!

I for one hate synical people that think everyone is out for something – guess that is just the way I was raised or I am just nieve – oh well that is something I refuse to change I always see the good in people. My bff is Lisa Tara Browning-Peters, we have known each other for 30 years!!!! Have been thru absolutely everything together good and bad (split apart for a couple of years) but found our way back to each other she is definately my sister from another mister. I love her to death and would do anything for her and her family (my niece and nephews) they call me Auntie Mary, I have known them since they were in the womb. Same with my babies. So there it is I love you Lees!
by Mary June 27th, 2008 at 6:41 amKarin, I feel so lucky to be counted among your friends! Thank you for putting up with my emergency whingeing sessions, the heavy sighs, and for being an amazingly supportive cheerleader.
The greatest thing about this career is the friends I have made. Writing romance got me back in touch with my former BFF and college roommate (the fabulous, beautiful, immensely talented Bella Andre), and introduced me to Monica McCarty (also so beautiful and talented I’d hate her if she weren’t so cool) who quickly became so much more than a critique partner. I would not have survived the past year without them!
by Jami Alden June 27th, 2008 at 7:11 amMy sister is my best friend. Why? She understands me, and knows me in and out, good and bad. She’s always there, and I can talk about both everyday simple things and those harder bad things too with her.
by elianara June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 amKarin, you’ve been giving to other writers since before you sold, and that’s one of the reasons people want to give back to you. The other reason is that your books are hot!
I have good friends outside of writing, but it’s my writing friends who understand what drives me. Only one of my non-writing friends gets that part of me.
by Edie June 27th, 2008 at 7:40 amYour heartwarming and lovely post gave me a good feeling. This past year I have been suffering badly from depression and anxiety. This was due to my young husband’s untimely death a year ago. My world caved in and I kept going. I don’t know where I got the strength but it was necessary for my sanity. My sister who I cherish and depend upon was there for me every step of the way. We don’t always agree on things and have different views but when I needed help she stepped in and was my entire support system. Without her devotion and love I would have fallen apart. I have to believe in kindess and goodness of people since it is what makes my world complete.
by ruth June 27th, 2008 at 7:43 amHi, Karin! your post made me teary, darnit lol.
by Wendy June 27th, 2008 at 8:41 amOnce again, ladies, you inspire me. Grabbing coffee, and will be right back!
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 9:07 amKarin, ironically I was just thinking this morning about how much I appreicate friends. I don’t want to ever take these people for granted.
I can’t wait to see the pic of the necklace!
by Jen June 27th, 2008 at 9:45 amOkay, I have a picture of the necklace but I have no idea how to upload the thing, so bear with me while I try to figure it out.
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 10:17 amKarin is getting veeeerrrrrreeeee frustrated.
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 10:24 amHi Karin,
by Maureen June 27th, 2008 at 10:28 amThere are a lot of great people out there. I think we forget about that sometimes.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can . . .
by admin June 27th, 2008 at 10:38 amAllison is a goddess! Thanks, A for putting the pic up!!

you can also cut and paste this link and see another pic of it.
Okay, gotta run for a few. I’ll be back!
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am
That is purrrrteee very classic and elegant. Does she have a website?
by Mary June 27th, 2008 at 10:55 amNo web site,
she’s concentrating on her writing. I wish she would do both.
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 11:21 amKarin, I know firsthand why you get so much lovin’ from everybody. As the Beatles said, “the love you take is equal to the love you make”. You’re a stand-up girl.
by J. Carson Black June 27th, 2008 at 11:37 amHi Karin,
by Jane June 27th, 2008 at 12:32 pmCongrats on the release of your two books this month.
“No web site, she’s concentrating on her writing. I wish she would do both.”
Ah, ok, explains why I couldn’t find one. Thanks anyway!
by Jen Baum June 27th, 2008 at 1:05 pmI know I don’t know you in person, Karin, but reading this and your personal blog every day, I feel like we could be friends in real life. Maybe someday we’ll get the opportunity to meet, grab a drink, swap war stories and just shoot the breeze. I’m rooting for you and your career. Here’s hoping for happiness in both – not just for you, but for all the gals here at Murder She Writes. Have a great day, Everyone. =o)
by B.E. Sanderson June 27th, 2008 at 1:59 pmMy eyes boggled
when I saw the necklace; the word has had special meaning for me recently. One of my closest writing friends gave me a ‘believe’ sign for my desk for my birthday this month. She firmly believes in the power of positive thinking and says her sign helped her through the difficult year before she published. She wanted me to have the same. She’s my biggest cheerleader and keeps me writing when I want to throw my laptop against the wall. Karin, I think you know Elisabeth. There’s no one more generous.
by Kendra June 27th, 2008 at 2:39 pmBeautiful necklace! My best friends are Caffey and readingissomuchfun. We met at author chats on the internet. We like the same authors and love chatting about upcoming releases or books we have read.
by Amy S. June 27th, 2008 at 3:55 pmOh, beautiful necklace! Poppy does great work. And you radiate good karma and friendship and fun, Karin–I know it’s going to keep coming back to you tenfold.
by toni mcgee causey June 27th, 2008 at 4:55 pmThanks for all the compliments on the necklace! That piece is really my favorite.
Jen: You can email me at pr@poppylaurel.com. I post stuff at poppylaurel.etsy.com on occasion, but I’m focusing on writing right now, so not a lot goes up.
by Poppy June 27th, 2008 at 5:31 pmPoppy I have to compliment you on a wonderful and very lovely necklace. I’m not really into necklaces but I have to say I would love to wear that one.
by Phoebe Jordan June 27th, 2008 at 5:43 pmMy best writing buddy is Jake (J. Carson Black). We’ve been buds since our first novel hit the shelves in . . . well, ahem, it was a while ago. She gives me support and advice and all the things a good writing bud gives another bud.
Karin, we didn’t connect when you were last in my neck of the woods. Maybe next time.
Love the necklace. It would make a great gift.
by Carol Luce June 27th, 2008 at 6:31 pmThanks, Phoebe. I love creating beautiful pieces, but love even more when people want to wear them. My father and brother are both silversmiths specializing in silver and turquoise Indian jewelry, and since I didn’t get to grow up with them, the craft makes me feel a little more part of the family. I won’t give it up, even if I don’t have time to run a real shop.
by Poppy June 27th, 2008 at 6:56 pmLovely necklace!
by Karin A June 27th, 2008 at 9:14 pmKarin, beautiful necklace! Just love it.
My writing friends are very precious to me too, and get me. And my daughers are great friends. Just so honored I struck gold when I met the Magical gals, and it led to you. Amazing people have crossed my path, and I’m grateful. Serendipity of the best kind.
by LaDonna June 27th, 2008 at 9:34 pmI knew everyone would love the neckalce. and just fyi, the circle with believe is silver. it looks gold in the pic.
by Karin June 27th, 2008 at 9:55 pmWow, Poppy designs jewelery? I didn’t know! But I have heard lots about what a great friend she is to you.
I think that if you are lucky, you might have one or two really, really good friends in your life. I think I have five or six, so I am super lucky, and yes, I count Karin among those friends.
by Natalie June 28th, 2008 at 12:15 amMy best friend is Lisa. Everything we do is so insync it’s weird. LOL Our birthdays are 2 days apart, we had our first babies one month apart on the same day, my dad just had heart surgery and her mom just had brain surgery. And through it all we are still the best of friends.
by Kimmy L June 28th, 2008 at 2:26 pmOh by the way Poppy I can’t get over how you made such a beautiful piece of jewelry. If you write anything like you make jewelry I can’t wait to read it.
by Kimmy L June 28th, 2008 at 2:29 pmPoppy, You certainly are talented and creative. All the best on your future success.
by anne June 28th, 2008 at 5:11 pmKarin, your lovely post was extremely well written, heartfelt and interesting since friendship runs deep and strong for me. My friends are always around in times of need and we all know that is what counts in life. Thanks for the great message.
Karin, what a lovely post and a beautiful necklace. Aren’t we all so fortunate to have great friends who carry us through good times and bad?
I’m blessed all around with great friends and sisters. In fact, when my sisters found out I was nominated for a Barry Award for THE BLACK WIDOW AGENCY, they surprised me by booking flights and a hotel room for all three of us! You can’t get better support than that even from a pair of $20 pantyhose.
by Felicia Donovan June 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pmAwwww, Carol, thanks for that, kiddo! It was a while ago that we sold our first books, but we were three and four years old at the time!
Poppy, that is a beautiful necklace. Unique and elegant!

by J. Carson Black June 29th, 2008 at 8:44 amI picked a winner, and now I’m gonna tease you.
I’ll announce the lucky girl Friday on my blog post. I don’t want to intrude on our guest’s blogs this week.
by Karin June 30th, 2008 at 2:06 pmOMG you are totally
! Do you like making us suffer?
by Phoebe Jordan June 30th, 2008 at 3:38 pmHi! I love your comments about friends. Those connections are definitely food for the soul. I’m happy to make your acquaintance and, whether I “win” or not, I will have won since I have been introduced to someone I’m sure I will enjoy. Best, Karen
by Karen Dyer July 1st, 2008 at 7:13 am
u r such a tease!! Now I will be wishing my week away in hopes that I am that lucky girl, but just having u for a friend I guess is luck enough. I know kissing up will get me no where
