What’s up with everyone in rehab?

There’s the old standbys: Drug rehab, and alcohol rehab. But the new millennium has born new rehabs. Anger rehab, I was yelled at by my mom and dad rehab, I did something stupid and need to hide rehab. And now, there is gay rehab? Not where you go to get ungay but where you go to learn to be more gay tolerant. Hey, why didn’t Mel Gibson go to anti Semitic rehab? San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom just admitted to having an affair with his campaign manager’s wife. Will he go to adulterer’s rehab? Heck, even Miss USA went to rehab. I didn’t know there was a naughty beauty queen rehab. And let’s not forget Lindsay Lohan’s one week stint in rehab (although I hear she’s back). She says she feels the best she’s ever felt. How does a week in rehab work? I mean can it? or did she really just need a place to go hide? Like Mel did. Yanno until bad behavior talk died down?

Listen, I’m all for people taking responsibility for their actions and seeking ways to become better, but c’mon, is rehab today what it was yesterday? So I kick some pedophile’s ass. Do I need to go to anger against child molester’s rehab? I yell at my kids when they get on my nerves. Do I have to go to shouter’s rehab? If I piss off my husband or a friend do I have to go to hubby/friend rehab? Has rehab become the catch all for adults who fail to take responsibility for their actions? Is it a way to brush bad behavior under the carpet? Does a person who goes into rehab for say, calling a homosexual a derogatory name come out cured? Or is it a thin veil of contrition we as the public are supposed to swallow as a cure for bad behavior? So that everyone can go merrily on their way. Are you getting fed up with all the willy-nilly rehabbing going on out there?

Now, please don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking rehab in its pure sense. It has its purpose and rehab has saved many lives, and will continue to do so, that isn’t what this blog is about. It’s about the absurd. Or maybe it’s just me. Is it me? or is everyone rehab happy? It seems to have gotten out of hand, it’s almost chic now to go into rehab. Kind of like getting Botox.

Everyone’s doing it, why aren’t you?

It isn’t just you. Rehab seems to have become the new ‘get out of jail free card’. Do a stint in rehab and all is forgiven. The old rehab was meant to fix a major problem – substance abuse of some kind mostly. Now it’s a bandaid to hide the boo-boo’s of society. If it was really rehab, how could they get anything accomplished in a week? Feh.

I definitely won’t knock rehab – it’s helped too many people I know. However, I agree with B.E. that it’s become sort of a “get out of jail free card” when celebrities f-up, the modern mea culpa. “I did/said something unforgiveable, but look at me, addressing the root cause and taking responsibility for my actions.” When usually the root cause is not alcohol/drugs/etc, it’s just basic assholeishness. There’s no rehab for that though.

I don’t pay much attention to the Hollywood folks, so I’m not getting much of a lowdown, but it seems like rehab is the new cool. That’s unfortunate. A good soul searching walk in the rain works well for me. And of course, “I screwed up–I’m sorry,” seems to work too!

One question: Do they have rehab for email and blog addictions?

  5. 5

Rehab sounds like the new getaway at a spa, except you have an excuse beyond self-indulgence. There’s not much rehab up here. ‘Course, that may be part of our problem, LOL.

‘get out of jail free card’ perfect analogy, B.E.

Jami, I won’t knock legit rehab either. As I said in my original post, it has saved too many lives, and will continue to do so.
But I think there needs to be reab for basic assholeness. There’d be a two year wait.

Karin–exactly! Rehab is being taken over by the rich and stupid :-) It takes away from those who’ve had real problems and addictions, tackled them through rehab, and deserve respect for their hard won success.

Karin – I knew you weren’t knocking real rehab, but it does seem to have become as a great out whenever anyone gets into trouble. And then it bugs me when people point at stupid celebs like Lindsey Lohan and say, “See, rehab doesn’t work,” when in fact it does if you take it seriously and not as a publicity stunt.

I think the Lindsey Lohan ‘rehab’ was more her people saving her from ‘an actress behaving badly’ moniker. didn’t work.

What I think is sad is the behavior of these young starlets and pop princesses. What is UP with Hollywood, allowing them into clubs to drink underage, and basically become addicts long before it SHOULD, if it’s gonna, happen?

An alcoholic long before you even turn 21? That’s scary to me. Combined with the drugs, and the eating disorders…. It’ll be a wonder if any of them live to see the age of 25.

    ROFLOL, B.E. You nailed it.

I also think it’s gotten WAAAAAAYYYY out of control.

The fact that people leave rehab after a week tells you two things.

    1) They don’t believe they have a problem
    2) They dont’ believe they have a problem

People buying up copies of the latest gossip rag to get the lowdown are only funding the bad behavior. Then you have teenagers posting their bad behavior on My Space type websites with mixed recourse (if any), and starlets caught on film acting bad with no recourse, except a one week trip to glam rehab you have to question what sort of society are we conducting? Underage drinking laws in California should be enforced for starlets too.

Nat those club owners want to be able to say so and so hangs out here. Yanno, it ups the bottom line.

    Well said, Cele.

When I worked in law enforcement, I had little faith in rehab..Most of the criminals I knew who went, were there only because it was court ordered, or their Parole Agent told them to go. It was rare when I saw a druggie in rehab because he wanted to be. One comes to mind, a gangster who went because his son was following in his foot steps, pretty closely. I guess he never thought it would happen that way. So when the kid was arrested for the same drug of choice, dad got the biggest message of his life, and put himself through. He actually was very successful after two or three tries, but he kept trying.
The celebs, who go to rehab, are just like the all the dirt bags I knew. Only difference, celeb wear designer clothes, not K-mart specials. The behavior was much the same.
