Book Trailers

There’s a discussion over at Robert Gregory Browne’s blog about book trailers. This is a subject near and dear to my heart because I did flash trailers for each book in my trilogy.

I picked flash because it loads fast, I can intro my website with it . . . but viewers can also click the “skip trailer” button. They’re short and sweet, not longer than 30 seconds, and they give the meat of the story. But the video trailers are really cool, too. They have people and high quality images and generally quality production.

But do book trailers really help?

I don’t know. I’m asking you. Do you like watching little video or flash trailers about books? Does it ever prompt you to read more? Buy the book? Is it just a nice added feature . . . or an annoyance?

I did trailers for each book: THE PREY, THE HUNT and THE KILL. I liked all of them, though I think THE HUNT captured the essence of the book the best.

But now I’m debating doing trailers for the next trilogy.

I want to do them. I’ll probably do them. I just don’t know if they make a difference.

I also don’t know if bookmarks make a difference, but I’m printing those, too.

So, what do you think? Book trailers: yeah, nay or indifferent? Share your favorite book trailer and why. Don’t forget to include the link so I can check it out!

I loved your flash trailers, Allison, and I know that I got a lot of comments on the one I did for WIVES AND SISTERS. I don’t know if there’s a way to measure their effectiveness, though.

As for bookmarks, when we were at Thrillerfest I asked a couple of booksellers what one promotional item authors did that was the most worthwhile. Without a doubt, that one thing is bookmarks. They said don’t waste your time with anything else.

To me, that was an expert’s opinion and I’m going with it.

  2. 2

I’ve seen a few book trailers, but none of them has ever prompted me to buy a book I wasn’t already planning on buying. But I’m a bibliophile. For all I know they might be VERY effective at attracting the attention of all those web-heads who don’t reach for a book to fill every unscheduled second.

  3. 3

Allison, trailers don’t influence me to buy a book, but I’m on dial up so I usually skip them anyway. Having said that, I think suspense is a really good genre for trailers. It’s easier to capture the emotions that go into a suspense and I can see where it would influence some book buyers.

Bookmarks I think of as a gift to readers kind of thing. Unfortunately I usually procrastinate and don’t get them done. I’m going to do some for the next book.

  4. 4

I also read RGB’s blog and the comments it generated. For me, I feel much like Tonda/Kalen; a trailer is not the selling point for me. If its on the author’s website, I’ll see it because I’m already interested in that author and am probably already reading his/her work. What sells me on a story is advertising in the same medium as the finished product. Movie trailers will sell me on seeing the movie, but reading a review or news article on it will not sell me if the trailer hasn’t already done that job. With books, since its a medium that I read, I am sold on a story by reading summaries or excerpts that stimulate my mental salivary glands. To me, creating the whole vision of a story in my head is a huge part of the reading process, and I like starting a book off with a “blank slate”. A trailer is jump start on that process. That may work for some people, but, for me, its the equivalent of finding that someone else has been coloring in my coloring book. What if they used colors I didn’t like? It won’t turn me off of a book I really want, but it won’t be the point that sells me on one either. But I’d rather read than watch tv or movies any day of the week.

  5. 5

I’ve actually watched some and skipped some. I know I watched yours and I now realize why, it loaded fast enough to hook me. (I come from a broadcasting background — dead air is the kiss of death). I also think having the option to skip the trailer is very important. My computer is very fast, but not everyone is as lucky. They might not want to watch for that reason. And return visitors will be turned off if they feel like they have to sit through a commercial everytime they want to enter your site.
Now, will they sell books? I think it’s much too early to tell, but my instinct is it may trigger a memory when they see your book in the library, or on the shelf. And I think that’s important.
Barbie wrote: “If its on the author’s website, I’ll see it because I’m already interested in that author and am probably already reading his/her work.”
She probably has a point with _most_ of the readers, but for both you and Deb, I came to your sites (and now here) because of links from other authors.
I am a very visual person; I loved editing news video and laying out pages.
And bookmarks: I think they’re well liked, and they can spread your name, based on the number I see left in library books ;) .

  6. 6

I love bookmarks. Of everything I pick up at conferences I still have my bookmarks. Some I give away because I’m a terrible turn down the page person (hubby hates that). If the book trailers have a skip feature I like them. I enjoy them the first time, or to show others, but I wouldn’t want to be stuck watching every time I access a website. I think they look professional and make the author look professional and pulled together.

  7. 7

I think an author would get more mileage out of doing a podcast of their first few chapters, or an ‘audio book demo.’

We don’t have the resources to make something like a movie trailer, but for books… and since it’s not a visual medium anyway, why bother?

Maybe I’m just being pessimistic, but I don’t see what value or benefit a trailer imparts for the reader/fan/customer.

  8. 8

I personally don’t like trailers that load on the homepage, even if like yours they are well done. To me, they are just an extra step to getting to where I want to go. The skip feature still requires a click (and in most cases two–one to “read” and one to actually skip). For sites I like, I end up bookmarking a page past the trailer. Diana Peterfreund has an OK one on her site, but once you’ve seen it once, it’s a pain to have to constantly circumvent. http://www.secretsocietygirl.com/ I much prefer if the site loads to the home page and THEN the trailer is given as an option to watch. Bookmarks are great, although ubiquitous. When I go to a conference and collect my bag, the first thing I do is go through all the bookmarks and toss the ones I don’t have any interest in buying. The others I keep. I’ve bough a few books from bookmarks so yes, I think they do work.

There has been a lot of talk in the past on various blogs about how readership is shrinking and how difficult it is to get a younger generation to pick up a book instead of watching TV or movie or playing a video game. I think a large part of the problem is that many of these kids either had terrible experiences with boring reading selections in high school (or in some cases, terrible teachers who made good books a dull, mind-numbing experience). When you look at an entire generation who has grown up with multi-media as the norm, then getting them to sit down and read a book is going to be difficult because they don’t really know the world of books and the adventures they could experience there. I’ve been pretty surprised at just how many people don’t really understand what “fiction” is — and didn’t ever really think about the fact that their favorite movie — or TV show — or game — was born from a writer.

So, how do we reach that sort of audience and bring them to reading? Especially if they’re not young adults and / or have been lured in by the Harry Potter phenom? I think one way to at least increase curiosity is the book trailer, if it’s done really well.

My personal feeling is that when an occasional reader ponders the thought of a bookstore, they are intimidated by the sheer volume of the choices. They don’t know the author’s names, they don’t really know the genre, and they think of it as the essay-torture they endured during high school. The only books which tend to break through this confusion / resistance are the best-sellers. Some people, for example, read the Da Vinci Code simply because they had heard about it and heard it was a thriller / page turner and became curious. This type of reader would probably read more, if they knew what to look for or who… if they had an inkling before buying the book as to the tone / hook. How is a debut author, or a mid-list author, then, to break through the clutter and entice them? You’re unlikely to get the occasional readers to visit a blog or read an excerpt, but they do tend to look at video more frequently.

I’m in the process of doing final edits for mine. It won’t go up on an official site, though, until much closer to the book is available for sale (May, ’07), because there’s no point in having it up if people can’t seek it out. Do I think it’ll increase sales? I have no clue, no real expectations. But if I can make people chuckle (Bobbie Faye’s Very (very very very) Bad Day is a comedic caper), then maybe they’ll remember it when they’re passing through a Target or, egads, an actual book store. (grin) And just breaking through to some level of recognition should help. (Unless they hate the trailer. Yikes.)

  10. 10

Oh, and I meant to add — I like the choice of viewing a longer trailer by clicking through, or having the skip button for shorter ones I’ve seen already. I’ll probably do a fifteen second intro one that can be skipped, with a link to the longer version.

  11. 11

Thank you everyone for your comments! Keep them coming. I just sent off my revisions and I need to do some errands. I’ll be back shortly to comment.

  12. 12

    Cool, but no cigar.

It’s not going to make me buy a book. What it CAN do is make me buy a book the first time I see it in the bookstores.

Which doesn’t actually matter since I don’t live in the US.

  13. 13

I agree with the majority that a trailer won’t make me buy a book. Like Toni said, it might create a new market for you among younger readers. Your trailers were compelling and well done.

  14. 14

I took to heart what one comment on my blog said about wanting to read rather than view someone else’s visual notion of what a book is about. Toward that end, I did a little Flash mockup that’s strictly text and sound and I’m curious to know what people think. You can find it here:

    http://www.robertgregorybrowne.com/kHG.html

It’s very, very simple. But is it effective? Who knows.

  15. 15

I love a good trailer! And a good solid bookmark.

  16. 16

[...] Anybody out there buy a book because of one? That’s what every body wants to know. I know I’ve not. I’ve bumped it up the priority list, but not bought a book just because of a trailer. But I’m an oddity: I am not a visual person at all. Don’t do movies or TV. [...]

  17. 17

I’m very much a visual person. I love TV and movies. I think the trailers show a creative person and I want to see if that creativity comes through in their books.

  18. 18

Can I marry Amanda? No? Damn. I really liked her answer. (grin)

I put up a bit more on my own blog about this, since I’m doing one, if anyone wants to see. (I think my name above is a link.) But I also realized after posting here just how much life has dramatically changed for novelists in the last few years with the advent of the internet… and blogs… and websites. Ten or twelve years ago, the internet was in its infancy and no one really imagined anyone other than computer geeks would find a use for it. Imagine what will change now that you can get video on your Ipods, TVs on the face of your refrigerator, satellite phones and internet. I think avid readers will always be first drawn to the words, and that’s as it should be. Multi-media-heads, though, could be drawn in by videos or other means, and a bigger audience would be a good thing.

(I’m kinda passionate about this since I’ve been working so hard to produce a good video. Um, shutting up now.)

  19. 19

Rob, the flash struck the right nerve. It hooked me immediately with the little girl’s sobs. Good job.

  20. 20

Rob, outstanding! I definitely want to read the book! Now I just have to figure out how to make one of those!

  21. 21

Thanks, Karin, Debra. Now if I could learn to write titles without making typos…

Actually, I’ve decided to tone down the girl crying a bit. Make it shorter. Some have complained it’s overkill and after some time away from the thing, I agree.

I’ll also be adding cover art at the end when I get it.

And Debra, I’m fortunate enough to have a background in this kind of thing. I used traditional methods, but you CAN do something similar in Flash or one of the Flash substitutes.

  22. 22

[...] I’m cribbing one of my comments posted over on Allison’s post for the Murder She Writes blog: There has been a lot of talk in the past on various blogs about how readership is shrinking and how difficult it is to get a younger generation to pick up a book instead of watching TV or movie or playing a video game. 23. 23

Robert, I’ll go back to your blog and post. I love the text. I do think that some visuals–if they’re like book cover visuals, for example–are good. So when you get your cover art you should blend elements of your cover into the text. IMO.

Also, do you have a reason why you’re directing people to the book title URL? I’d think you’d want to brand your name, not the book. But there might be a good reason and I’m always listening for new ideas.

Sorry gang that I’ve been out of it. I was working late every night to get my revisions done (basically writing/re-writing from 9-3 in the day, then 9-12 at night) so I was zonked and went to Macy’s with my mom yesterday to buy shoes :)

  24. 24

There’s no real reason for the book title URL at the end, as this is just a test. I’ll most likely put my usual URL. I created a separate URL for the book so that just in case they don’t know my name, they might remember the title of the book, do a search and hey! I’m trying to cover all ground.

As for artwork, I’m going to keep everything simply black and white until the very end, when I’ll show the cover. The point of the complete black — in case no one got it — is that we’ve got a little girl buried alive here and this is what she sees. Whatever. :)

That said, it’s still a work in progress.

And I think this is about all I’ll do rather than go full production. I’ve been getting very positive feedback privately, readers emailing saying it makes them want the book — so I guess that ain’t bad.

  25. 25

When I read my post, I realized that hey! sounded like I was yelling at someone. I wasn’t. I probably should have put surprise!

  26. 26

Robert, I’ve wanted the book since I read the premise.

Thank you EVERYONE for your responses. I’ve been off-line a lot these last couple days and I really appreciate the input on this question. I like Robert’s flash because it’s simple and to the point. While I like leading into my site with the flash, I’m rethinking that . . . mine are very short, but some people do get annoyed.

Anyway, I love trailers so I’m going to have them. It’s the implementation that I’m working on right now.

  27. 27

    Allison,

Your trailer sold at least one book, to me. :) It worked because it was short, and shocking, good combination of text and visuals that created a scary mood, but told enough about the story to make me want to know more.

Rob, yours does the same, and I agree that it would be more effective with some visuals too.

I think the key to trailers is that they’re short and that you have the option to skip it. I’ll watch the trailer once, and then I don’t want to bother with it again and if I can’t easily get past it, it becomes annoying.

I think trailers are very effective if they’re done well.

I find it interesting that booksellers rave about bookmarks. I’ve never bought a book because of a bookmark. I just throw them out, and see tons of them in the trash at conferences. As cute as a lot of promo items are, I think I’d put my money into a trailer, and any kind of web/blog promos and an excerpt, the excerpt is what makes me immediately hop to Amazon and do the one click buy thing.

    :) Pam

  28. 28

I think book trailers are really cool, but I only look at them if an author mentions on a list that they just got one. Then I’ll go visit and watch.

But, it’s never sold me on a book, and I always hit the ‘skip trailer’ button. I did see on someone’s website (don’t remember who) where they had the trailer going in a little box on the main page. So I could check out the links and figure out where I wanted to go, and watch the trailer out of the corner of my eye. I thought that was cool!
