While the holidays bring out the best in many people it brings out the worst in others. There are lots of grinches out there who wait until the Whos of the world are asleep or out visiting to strike. They target the cheerful Christmas tree, most especially what lies gaily wrapped beneath it or cut your purse strings, literally, as you shop, and run off with your wallet and ID.
Here are a few holiday tips to make you less vulnerable to the grinches of the world:
Make sure you lock your doors and windows.
Leave a light on during evening hours.
Leave exterior lights-front back and side on (thieves do not like a well lit house).
Do not leave a key out, thieves look for them, find them, then help themselves to your home.
If you have a dog, leave it in your house, especially ones that bark (like mine) at the slightest hint of someone outside, thieves do not like barking dogs.
Let neighbors know if you are going to be away for an extended period of time.
Cancel newspaper and mail delivery during your absence.
When shopping, store packages safely in your trunk not in your back seat where they are visible.
When paying for purchases do not display all of your cash.
Always be aware of your surroundings.
Remember where you park.
Park as close to the mall or shopping center as possible.
Try to do your shopping in daylight hours.
Never give personal info over the phone to solicitors. Ask them for a phone number to call them back at your convenience.
If you don’t have a peep hole, don’t open your door for strangers. Ask who is there, and what they want. Don’t be bashful, it could save your life.
Keep you cell phone charged, and let someone know where you are going.
Have an emergency kit in your car.
Last and certainly not least, go with your gut, your intuition, if someone or some situation doesn’t sit right with you, contact a cop, call a friend, or wait it out in a store.
I’m sure I’ve missed a few good tips, anyone else?
'tis the season to pillage and plunder

Karin, what a timely set of tips, thank you! We all get stressed and in a hurry and sometimes sacrifice common sense. Taking care of ourselves in the best gift we can give our family and friends!
And the author of hot cops has spoken . . . great advice!
My advice is if you have a fireplace, keep a fire lit. Otherwise I’ve heard a colorfully dressed man will climb down and steal your cookies and milk.
This isn’t something you need to worry about, Karin. He only comes if you’re good.
Karin, while they are very timely, they are never untimely tips (well unless they are not heeded) Thank you.
Edie my mom always told me two things about men: They are easily fooled by food (I think that is her version of “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach) and make them think it’s their idea. Maybe the guy in the red suit heard she is “good.”
and really there was a third but I can’t share that here.
Jen I wish some people would just be sacrificed out of common sense.
I have to say Karin, peep holes have scared me for decades.
Boy, timely all right. We came home Wednesday evening to discover an intruder had broken into our house and trashed our Christmas tree. The police believe they knocked over the tree, and that, plus our barking dog, scared them off. Scared me, too. It’s a terrifying feeling, and a huge violation.
Good tips, Karin.
Jen, you nailed it, common sense. It’s the best deterrent.
Edie, if the man in the red suit knows what’s good for him , he’ll manage to squeeze his chubby gut down my chimmeny and ply me with sparkelies. I’m counting on him knowing I’ve been naughty. Don’t you know it ups the carat count?
Cele, I like your guy in the red suit. and I know what you mean about the peep hole scare, I’ve seen too many movies where the person inside looks out and gets shot in the head or the door is kicked open and the person flattened. So, be sure you have a hell of a dead bolt and bullet proof glass.
Nat, you inspired my post. Glad all is well at home.
Great tips, Karin! Thanks for posting them. So glad things are okay at home, Nat!!
